Hopefully I'm missing something here.....but why would you send ships incapable of shooting down ballistic missiles to goad Nk into shooting ballistic missiles at you? Please just google the title and this will come up on Bloomberg Politics . Sorry , I don't know how to bring this info to this thread. This article clearly states that the Vinson strike group escorts don't have the ability to intercept ballistic missiles fired at them. Is this a false flag just waiting to happen....or what?

You should hit up the ever-brilliant Zaphod on this, but I do believe that there are at least two Arleigh Burke destroyers in that battle group that would be equipped with the Aegis system capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.

Youre not serious, right? They dont need to. They are surrounded near and far by US Forces capable of hitting flies mid air......

***c/o Wikipedia-ARMADA: "Armada is the Spanish and Portuguese word for naval fleet, or an adjective meaning 'armed'; Armáda (pronounced [ˈarmaːda]) is the Czech and Slovak word for armed forces."

We have subs and long distance missle and air security for these vessels and they are many...plus allied support. Its Lil' Kimmie who's screwed...

***P.S. They are called a "strike group" for a reason. Not to fling a few and sit like ducks to get picked off. Believe that...

I have a hard time believing this. I think at least a couple of ships are equipped with Standard Missiles in the latest Block.

Naval Assets are not the only thing there.

THAAD has been fielded on the ground.

If they don't have the SM-3 or Block IV SM-2s and radar upgrade it doesn't matter.

Right on. I have to think that there would be pretty much every sea-based anti-ballistic missile capability brought to bear in this case.

Could you explain how this relates to the Vinson strike group ?

There are a few inaccuracies there, which isn't surprising.

There are at least 16 ships in the Pacific Fleet capable of ballistic missile defense. They're a mix of cruisers and Destroyers. One of those isn't capable of long deployments after suffering major damage running aground just outside Pearl Harbor a few years ago.

They use a combination of SM-2 Block IV and SM-6 (once they reach operational status) to stop missiles in the terminal phase, and the SM-3 Block I/IA, and soon the Block II/IIA to hit them in the mid course phase of flight.

If none of the ships in the group have the upgrades, they most likely can't stop a ballistic missile fired at them, without some luck on their side.

I don't know if they've had the Aegis 5.4 upgrade or not though. If they have, then even without the right missiles, their ability to stop an incoming missile is a lot higher than reported.

They already have THAAD missiles installed on the South Korean peninsula and in Japan. The Navy doesn't need to shoot ICBM missiles. But they have weapon systems to shoot down high speed missiles like Exocets, so they have that covered.

So, am I right to be concerned about the info in this Bloomberg story ......?

Yes and no. They'd have to find them first to be able to fire a missile at them, and that's not a very easy thing to do. They can stay far out of range of anything but an over the horizon radar system, and at that range, unless they're really spread out they'll just appear as a couple of ships going on their way.

Even if they somehow do get a shot off, the type of missiles being talked about are very stoppable, especially with Aegis 5.4. There is no guarantee they could stop it without the BMD system and missiles, but it's quite possible.

You Also have to remember that ships in a battle setting don't bunch up together like you've been seeing on the news, they spread out, and way out in the open seas its like trying to target a needle in a haystack. Doubt NK has that sophistication yet.
