They were giving us all the tech details, so we could figure out where to park them. Since the 747 is so big, you have to move it out when you park it in front of Base Ops at Hickam. So we measured how far out, and marked, then measured where to park the back up. We showed the Japanese advance team, and they said we couldn't do that. We asked them why, and they said when we fuel them, the wingspan increases 13 feet, so if we park them side by side, the wings would touch.

It's still amazing what they were willing to do back then. They gave 1950s-60s America a real run for its money in terms of sheer technological ambition.

It kills me to think that the bottom fell out of their economy before their plans for a domestic SST went anywhere. If there was anybody who had the will, the know-how, and the money to actually make a Concorde successor happen, it was 1980s Japan.
