back in the WWII era the US had a scientist named John Whiteside Parsons. He developed asphalt-based solid fuel rockets and helped found what is today the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
He was also a cultist who practiced ceremonies at his house and had a habit of reciting 'Io Pan' during launches.

science, like the arts,tends to attract highly creative people with their share of foibles.
