Question concerning a comet or meteor that passed by?

this was during one of these scheduled meteor shower events, remember radio saying go out at night and watch, just earlier in day

Thanks Exupery, none of the above, in Canada, outside Gananoque ontario, close to American border, would say it heading roughly North south, from my perspective a ball of flame burning steady leaving slight smoke trail, close to evening but still quite sunny out, definately watch 5 mins at least as it went out of site

Good description (the direction helped, too). It very definitely sounds like a contrail.

I hope this thread is not moved to the Skunk Works. It is a good exercise in observation & analysis.

The reason I asked about location is because I once saw the Space Shuttle re-entering in the pre-dawn darkness over Arizona. It was moving from west to east on its way to the Cape. It was a distinct orange spark that left a dull red trail of ionized air behind it. The trail did not billow or roil at all.
