Iranian students threw a graduation dance party. It cost them 99 lashes each.

It happens behind closed doors in Iran all the time: Young people get together to play music, flirt and generally relax, hidden away from hard-liners who definitely would not approve. Mostly, the parties wrap up without incident: the guys cleaning up any incriminating clues, the girls putting their headscarves back on. Then they all go their separate ways. This time, however, someone tipped off authorities that a group of students was throwing a bash to celebrate graduation. More than 30 were taken into custody. Their punishment: 99 lashes each.

Authorities would not tolerate law-breakers who use excuses such as " freedom and having fun " in birthday parties and graduation ceremonies.

What a sad state of affairs these young people have to go undercover to celebrate graduation from school.They were only doing what NORMAL young people do, enjoying themselves with their friends. Their is a huge disconnect between the Iranian people and the what is left of the revolutionary regime still clinging to power. As money and trade move into Iran the people will have more money and more power. It is only a matter of time before a secular moderate Iran arrives.

Good. That will show them not to follow America's culture.

Keep in mind that this also happens in Saudi Arbia, the US's closest ally and head of the UN human rights counsil

What kind of party isn't about drinking with girls? If it's all boys and Hawaiian punch, that's no party.

Get a hold of yourself. By 18 I should have received 5000 lashes by your and Iran's standards, and that's not even counting some of the hanky panky time in the bedroom.

Don't worry, it was safe. My dad did the demo with a banana and condom but.....just throw on another 500 lashes for that.

I agree the Iranians and other cultures take it to the extreme and that's not good but a little conservatism is obviously good.

A lot of culture forbids such a thing. Especially when you get a girl impregnated. This drinking party is what modern US does.
This party never existed in US past. It became a massive modern thing, especially in the media. You don't see cowboys getting drinking and doing it with random girls unless they were those type of woman looking for it. Especially in early era schools(as it said it was a graduation).

i think it sucks for them but then again, this is happening in another country where it really isn't my problem. its only my problem when it spills over to us (the USA).

That was because the social norms of women did not allow them. norms were to find a good provider, with birth control and big daddy government that norm has severely weakened, causing some societal issues.
