3 of us here in the UK 2 English and 1 Irish have just spent about an hour trying to name all of the US states and it is harder than you think!

We managed to get 42 before we gave up and looked it up on google which I do not think is all that bad (although one of us lived in the states for two and a half years).

So without cheating can you name them all?

I am also interested to know if this is something a US citizen can do with ease or is it a bit tricky even for you?

EDIT: There is a list below in case you wan't to have a go and not cheat!!

I was in a choir as a kid where one of our songs had a section that put all 50 in alphabetical order. Needless to say, I have never had a problem with all 50 since.

As an American, I think a more impressive feat would be to try and name all the countries in Africa.

I think I could maybe get 10, but I think some of the ones I think I know aren't countries anymore.

You should try this interactive quiz on the middle east, it made me realise how appaling my geography was but I got there in the end.

I'm very conscious of the geographical arrangement of the states through reading of history, so I can run through them easily enough (though I can't prove it).

I would be able to do most of Africa, except that I get foxed by the post-independence names. So when somebody writes about the "Congo Republic", I don't know whether I'm supposed to be visualising the Belgian Congo or the French Congo.

Actually in the 5th grade it is mandatory to not only name all 50 but all state capitals as well. By writing them on a map of the US.

Well it was back in my day during the late 80s in Indiana.

So yes I can name all 50 states and state capitals by sight, or geographical location on a map.

I had an online friend who was a trucker in America. When we chatted, I'd ask him where he was and then go on Google maps to follow him around. Not stalking, I hasten to add.

It was great fun and I was actually learning a bit about where the various States were situated. I'm really not sure how many I could name, though.

Here's a handy song to help those struggling:
