When we had this it was a ghost telling us to get out of the house for our own safety. There was a serious structural defect built into the house and it was condemned and demolished soon afterwards.

The stink would sometimes fill the whole house, sometimes just one area. I realised it was supernatural when the stink stayed in one place, a globe about four feet across. Opening the windows at both ends to create a strong draught didn't move it. That was weird.

From our experience of something similar I'd say possibly it's a spirit getting your attention in a way you can't ignore. Ask yourself intuitively what the spirit wants you to know. It may be warning you of some danger.

I'll have to agree with someone else who posted on this. You can't pass the buck on this one. Blaming your gas on a ghost is about as transparent as the ghost.

Check for a dry drain on the sinks or an unused shower, sometimes a wiff of sewer gas can backup into the house. A downdraft from the vent can push it out and you might never smell it otherwise. If this is the case, there are some odorless gasses that can be in your house even though you do not know about it.

Embarrassment
made me laugh with nerves when I unfortunately dropped one in a chemistry lecture, though I tried not too the discomfort and disgust of those around me whom were passing accusatory stare's at one another made it erupt though I was profusely apologetic, oh this was about 27 years or so ago and I am still ashamed of it, the lecturer actually evacuated the classroom, I had dined on a particularly rich and exotic meal the previous night and it created a smell unlike anything I have ever encountered before or thankfully since.

But when you are in a lift (elevator) and it happens don't automatically assume it is the large guy with the paunch as it is often the little old lady with the small dog whom keep's a still and expressionless face.

Now a more serious answer, Methane or swamp gas is often the product of rotting vegetation and other organic material and can when mixed with other trace gases such as sulphur (bad egg' smell) have a rather nasty wiff to it so is it a green space and also is there a nearby sewer hatch of manhole cover, drainage channel, stream or similar as that may be the culprit.

As for paranormal well bad paranormal smell's have been reported often especially in cased classified as Demonic possession and haunting and one encounter I had with what I believe to have been a paranormal entity was accompanied by a strong and revolting odour of rotting fish.

A serious question yet it made me choke on my coffee when I saw it.
You're the only one that smells that? Do you also get headaches a lot? The reason I ask is when I went to a doctor for my migraines he asked if I was smelling odors of various types. I guess it's because if you have a brain tumor you smell stuff sometimes. Anywho, just a suggestion. I didn't see anyone else bring it up.

Yah, better get that gassy smell checked by the gas company. Until then, I withhold any discussion of manifestation 'residue' phenomena.

LMAO oh man. This thread is pure gold. Thank you so much OP. I apologize if I'm making light of your predicament but this thread has filled me with joy. A scientific discussion of the possible causes of a flatulent smell. I hope you get it figured out.

hydrogen sulfide smells like fart (its in farts, actually). But it will kill you before you really register the smell.

Heh...Heh...The Moderator just said "Fart".

Are we ruling out Gecko farts, then?
Seriously. Have your home checked for gas leaks...and if that comes out smelling like a rose, put some baking soda down your sink drains.

You know there's a saying that goes: "Are you a fart smeller or a smart feller?" Sorry, I couldn't resist. Everyone else was having so much fun.

There are certain plants and flowers that give off a sulfur smell.
Also, there is a new pill out that makes farts smell just like chocolate...It's from France, so you know it's good:

As far as how you get your Geckos to take them, you're on your own.

You really had all the investigative effort down. I must say YES there have been decades of reports on ghost farts. You gave the description and that is how they smell. hope they just fart and do not eat also, or worse.... keep us all apprised.

If you have natural gas you might want to get your lines checked, it has a nasty old boiled egg smell so people can smell when there is a leak.

A friend of mine had a broken sewage pipe just outside his house, not like fart, but nasty xD. Also as other have mentioned, a gas leak (but that doesn't smell like farts, at least not in my country), sulfur (more like rotten eggs)...

Can't think of anything else.
