I would apply that same quality to some members of US police forces too.

But we (in the UK) have drug addicts, violent criminals and so forth too. It's fairly difficult not to label many criminal activities, particularly those against the person, as negative, surely?

It's not my intention to try and take this down a UK vs US route, rather than to provide some comparison to a similar-ish nation.

However, given that there (to me) seem to be an excess of cop related deaths, and you state that your criminals are particularly jacked-up and negative, would that imply that the issue here lies with something about US culture?

Yeah, all lives matter. But the evidence shows that 'unarmed' black people get shot at a far higher rate than any other demographic, that's not even including the shootings that are publicly unreported. Hence the motives behind the recent protests (and riots).

About half the victims were white, half minority. But the demographics shifted sharply among the unarmed victims, two-thirds of whom were black or Hispanic. Overall, blacks were killed at three times the rate of whites or other minorities when adjusting by the population of the census tracts where the shootings occurred.

To me , that number represents app 400 criminals that will not be able to harm or rob the law abiding citizens of this country ever again. And I wonder if that number includes the 2 ISIS members in Texas.Also , 400 criminals out of a population of >300 million with 2,266,800 in prison is not a large number at all .

"unarmed" black people are killed at a rate of around 20 per day. That's something that needs to be looked at and solved before the Police issue.

I wonder, how about the number of police officers killed as they sat in their police cars, etc.? Can you get the larger picture yet that society is going crazy on both ends of the spectrum? And my opinion is that it didn't start with the cops. One side acts up and the other reacts. It goes back to many things, but basically it is the lacking of structure in today's often fatherless "families" and the young toughs, both male and female, exit any construct of family that they were raised with and want to do their own thing to the world.

The tactics of the police today are a response to the growth of the general disrespect and lawlessness in this country today. Their job gets tougher and more dangerous every day. As a consequence they are taught to respond in precise manners to potential threats. Keep that in mind. They don't take your lip or being slow to comply as they formerly did.

Myself, I don't expect to respond to a cop's order such that my face gets planted in concrete and a knee on my neck. Except for driving a couple of miles over the posted limit, my life is fairly crime free.

I wonder how many were shot and then it is discovered that they were carrying? Look I am not the enemy here, nor are a percentage of innocents that have been shot. Everyone seems to be looking for a race to blame. For a race to raise up in glory because of their race. Individuals, always individuals. United we will stand divided we will fall.

By the way, last year 105 policemen were killed in the line of duty. This year 112 have been killed to date. That’s more than the number of blacks killed by white policemen, yet Sharpton sheds no tears for any of them.

I was under that impression as well.

But we've been so psychologically and, dare I say, chemically pacified that, as I said in the OP, no one really has the balls to do anything significant about it at all (and I'll include myself in that).

When I think about how much evil is out there, I am more than happy with the trade off of having the police we currently have VS not having them at all.

Even though I have had bad experiences with police as an upper class white male, I would hate to live in a world without them.

I think there could be some changes made to make things better, but the problem is not the police. The problem lies with laws, the people, and the state of certain communities.

I would bet my life that 99% of the people that post on this forum don't have the collective balls to be police officers. It's easy to sit back and judge people who put themselves out there to create change.

There are bad people out there that deserve to die. The world isn't some perfect fairy tale where if only we didn't have a few corrupt police everybody would be sitting around holding hands singing kumbaya. Without police the world would be a terrible place to live, and we wouldn't have been able to progress to the point we are at today.

As for myself, I don't have the "right" sense of morality to be a cop. When my partner starts beating someone up for no reason, I will not be able to turn a blind eye. When he shoots an unarmed kid in the back, I'll have to fight the urge to turn my weapon on my partner.
