This guy was an olympic icon and an inspiration to many youngsters growing up in the 70's.

I don't think that's really an equal comparison. If that's the way you put it, any guy dressed in women's clothes should be accepted in a women's restroom? I don't care if he's changed his gender, I can bet 10 to 1 if most women knew who they were sharing a restroom with, they would make a hasty exit.
