The McDonalds that are being shut down.. Are they all owned by the same owner?
Why just McDonalds? Is that particular franchise somehow shotty when It comes to cleanliness?

Or is it something more symbolic... Its the first western food chain that is known to be an American icon. Its the first chain in Russia after the collapse of the USSR.

I don't think this is an "attack" on McDonald's... I think its an attack on "America" symbolically. It represents everything Putin does not like about the west.

A vision, seeing unmarked black limo's pulling up to the local MacDonald drive-ins that are still open, and then heading back to Putin's office fulfilling a late-nite snack attack. He did this recently to fruit and vegetable growers recently.. right? Wonder what is in his fridge.

Probably vodka, some nice caviar and the bodies of his political opponents.

What about Russians who owned these Mcdonalds, the Russian trucking companies, and in country Russian manufacturing plants?
Thats many thousands of employees that will now look for work with possibly lesser working conditions.

They may work with other products, but nothing is going to sell and make them money like a Big mac.

EDIT TO ADD:
The only plus side to all this is that the pictures of fat Russian kids eating Mcdonalds who other people think are American kids will die down.

Thats Russian on the sign in the background.

Thats definitely not russian, and thats coming from a russian person, my girlfriend.
Looks more like hebrew or greek to me

Instead of using a horribly downsized photograph, why don't we go to the original source for that picture, easily found with TinEye. The original photograph comes in 1600 pixel horizontal resolution. Much better.

Crop out all the background.. Perform a horizontal flip on the sign. Straighten the horizontal a little to make the words nice and level, and finally overlay an edge detection below it for comparison. We get this..

Really doesn't look like any Russian I've seen. Looks more like Hebrew actually.

www.vox.com...

The Russian government appears to be waging a stealth campaign against the world's most famous fast food franchise, closing branches en masse, in what appears to be retaliation against the United States over its support of Ukraine's government in the ongoing conflict there.

I don't think it would be retaliation for supporting Ukraine, but retaliation for the sanctions and accounts they froze. Fair game.

Which are frozen because of Russian action in Ukraine. This is Russia once again hurting itself while trying to act macho.

Close down Mc Donalds in the US and you'd probably start a revolution

People who go through drive-thrus, never getting out of their cars, generally don't start revolutions. They'd just find another drive-thru

There is nothing strange here, when Ukrainian crisis started and Russia took Crimea, McDonalds did some kind of protest, they closed their branch in Crimea or something like that (i dont remember exactly). The same day, one of Russian deputies said that they should close all McDonalds branches because 1* they are protesting on the wrong land, 2* its unhealthy (said in sarcasm). He added that they would open some similar Russian branch of restaurant, but more healthy on their property.

Next day I saw news that McDonalds are getting checked by some government institutes, it was clear that they took it serious. I am from Ukraine, so I know when such institutes come to check you there, its either you did not pay your bribes to them or you are getting closed by someone.

And btw, don't hate me, I like Putin

Can you explain why you took this line out of that article?

Ostensibly, these McDonald's are being closed for health reasons. But analysts are skeptical.

It should be in between the 2nd and 3rd paragraph.

All McDonald's in the US should be shut down for the same reason, but they won't. Russian products that are exported to Ukraine will have to adopt stricter standards if Ukraine enters the association agreement with Europe. Russia is applying these same standards to McDonald's to make a point.

The only issue with your posts would be your intentional ability to forget specifics when it puts Russia or Putin in a bad light.

So its only McDonalds that is unhealthy in Russia?

Ironic.

Secondly Russian standards are below the EU so what they are doing is not making any point.

You don't have to worry about it. I think he is a great politic, I know what are his bad actions as well.

He is not saint, he have done some terrible actions, but don't forget that he did it for his own country. And those actions are not that bad if you look what US president did around the world
