Can't we, as members of ATS, debate without resorting to name calling and the waging of ideological warfare?

I don't care if you identify as pro-left or pro-right.
I don't care if you identify as pro-Israel or anti-Israel.
I don't care if you identify as Muslim, Jewish, Christian or Atheist.
I don't care if you identify as a conspiracy theorist or a sceptic.

I don't care what specific ideology you hold. I am just sick of the endless name calling, public shaming and ideological warfare of which some have been casting on others.

Recently, i have been participating in some debates, ranging from the USA's immigration crisis to the Israeli-Gaza conflict. I have been called numerous names, from along the lines of libtard, to Nazi.

Now, i don't really care all too much, and i can take these things on the chin. I am just sick of seeing the endless wars where not only myself, but a lot of others, are subjected to hate and ridicule just because they share different ideologies or opinions to other members.

And while i, myself, have slipped up and let off a few statements in the past, i have tried to correct them, and have apologised where possible.

All i see are potentially worthy debates, falling due to name calling and ideological rubbish.

Don't get me wrong, ATS is still the place to be when it comes to civil discourse. I suppose i am just disappointed in that many are beginning to take the route of name calling and ridicule, all in the name of ideological warfare.

Don't forget that it is the Summer period mate...

Things will quieten down and more civilised conversations and debates will be held once the school holidays are over.

One of the reasons why I hardly come onto ATS during this period.

Kindest respects

Shame on you Daas! Tsk, tsk, tsk...What are you doing thinking for your self? You know that many frown upon such a extreme thing.

Now go buy a iPhone...you'll feel better.

We actually talked about this very same thing on Reality Remix last night. Keep on being the civil disagreeable curmudgeon that you are!

And just what is wrong with name calling?
If the title does not fit, you have them beat as they have resorted to calling a name rather than logic or fact.
Call me a name and I know my foot has landed squarely on your tail, next foot lands right on the head of the rat.

I've had my fair share in the past, haha. Seriously though, i wasn't such a pleasant member when i first joined. I threw stuff, and people threw it right back at me.

But yeah, i don't go to the Chemtrail forums all too much. I have visited some times though.

Thanks for the reply.

While i agree in that name calling is generally an indicator of the success of one's argument, i feel it doesn't bode well for the direction of overall threads. It disrupts the debates, and almost always leads to the core of the thread being lost in an endless pool of hate.

Thanks for the reminder. Down in Australia, we don't really get any significant mid-year breaks, so those things tend to slip past me, haha.

Yeah, hopefully things improve soon, haha.

Thanks for the comment!

Hey daaskapital!

Totally agree here!
There is nothing as aggravating as participating in a thread that you really like, only to have some moron (oops, did I say that?) argue, insult you, or just bait you until you give up.

Most of the time I just click my ruby red slippers together and repeat, "Different isn't wrong, it's just different."

Much as I try to remain diplomatic, there are times when I really wish I could just reach through the monitor and choke somebody for ruining a great thread.

ahh...hahahaha...."Are you...talking to me?" (said in Robert DeNiro voice)

You and I both participate in threads where our differences are ignored, and we instead glory in what we have in common! It's a nice refuge from the absurdity of insults.

Now I just back out of threads when someone gets personal, like responding by telling me my avatar is 'stupid'.

I had the same thought, also with regards to the Palestine issue/debate.

People take sides or positions and "argue" about them, presenting "facts" or some kind of information to try and justify their opinions.

Its my feeling that most people have already made up their minds.

And none of this back and forth really helps to "reach the other side" or change anyone's mind.

I've found that a more conciliatory tone is more helpful in bringing people together, assuming thats the desired outcome.

TPTB seem to love the idea of division. Without division, you cant have conflict. Without conflict, theres no divide and conquer...

Once you get labeled a "people like you" Insults and derogatory names just roll off your back.

There is a real sense of freedom being marginalized and discounted in the discussion.

After awhile you just don't care anymore!!!

You know ATS is wholly, fully and inevitably totally just an entertainment website, just a business that tries to make cash.
Well, that and an NSA datamine as is every form of text on the web whether private or public.
But in the end all we say here will not really make a difference unless in the rare case you are able to reach someone's logic center.
I have changed quite a lot in the past 20 years, I used to be a real hard ass, I'm a real softy now.
If it gets to you, take a break, the bickering will still be here when you get back, and you will be back.
The place is interesting and sometimes you run into a good debate and some true silver tongue devils as well.
It's all for fun, and beatings will continue until morale improves!

Been called everything in the book then some over the years in over a dozen languages ..

Gotten used to it .. lets me know am still among the living when find myself on the recieving end ..

Grab a beer.. relax .. sit back and enjoy the show .. eventually the kiddies will get bored and find other ways to keep themselves amused ..

Though think the mods should get hazard pay during the school hols with all the kiddies disrupting the normally calm atmosphere ..
