Police arrested a 65-year-old man in Milford, Conn., after he allegedly shot a squirrel in his yard on Monday. Upon further investigation, officers recovered an unregistered “assault rifle” and three “large-capacity magazines.”

It always has been a law here for more than 40 years shooting a fire arm in a public area such as your back yard.

Now James Toigo faces a plethora of gun-related charges, including unlawful discharge of a firearm, cruelty to an animal, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree breach of peace, failure to register an assault rifle and three counts of possessing large-capacity magazines.

He shall hang from the highest yardarm for crimes against rodentia.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't such a travesty of justice.

I'm gonna have to side with the police on this one. If you are supposed to register guns and you don't, why go outside and shoot it? Police don't just shrug off gunshots in an area that has gun registration laws.

I think they will try to make an example out of this man in an attempt to scare others into compliance. It could backfire on them though if they are not careful. Many people are not happy with the new laws, or how they were steam rolled into existence.

Shooting your gun in town is stupid. But this ma isn't to be put on trial for his IQ. He will be put on trial as an example for a law that many do not agree with.

We have to keep in mind: stupidity isn't a crime, even if it makes criminals easier to spot.

Scare into compliance? You mean like 3 strike laws and mandatory minimum sentencing for drug charges? Yes, that is working out SOOOO well.

Just wait until the for-profit prison lobbyists get their slimy claws on these laws. This is literally another cash faucet for them to turn on and start raping the public of its money while increasing their slave labor force.

It is illegal to make people register guns. This is the real law of the land and every other law is a lie. We need to return to our roots and stick with the constitution.

However he did discharge this weapon in a city and should pay a fine. But all the rest of this crap is a progressive pipe dream.

By the stroke of a pen a little 10/22 or Marlin becomes an ASSAULT RIFLE, that's.........ridiculous.

An assault rifle if that term can even be used after being so misunderstood is a short barreled rifle made to clear urban structures and trenches in battle. Under the arbitrary definitions used he's a felon, but the man has done nothing more than misdemeanor discharge within town or city limits.

Shooting a squirrel in your backyard is hardly a felonious act as he's charged with.

I hope this backfires on the politicians who enacted such draconian law which by any sensible reading is blatantly unconstitutional.
