Good Day ATS.

I am truly shocked that this has not been posted yet, because this is probably the most important decision that the Supreme Court in the US has ever made.

It will effect every single American profoundly. The founding Father's dream of a Democratic Republic was officially killed yesterday. It has been dying the death of a thousand cuts, but this is the final nail in the coffin.

Supreme Court strikes down aggregate limits on campaign contributions on First Amendment grounds

Until today there were two limits on donating to candidates. One was the base limit, the cap on the amount you can give to any single candidate. The other was the aggregate limit, a cap on the total amount you can give to all candidates. Right now you’re capped at $48,600 when donating directly to candidates and $123,200 total, including party committees; if you want to give more than that, too bad. The base limit is there to prevent you from dropping $10 million on a congressman, essentially buying his seat for him, and then having him do your bidding forever. It’s supposed to be a stumbling block to corruption.

So now corporations can buy all the representation they want with UNLIMITED, UNRESTRICTED donations.

This completely undermines the whole idea of a representative government, which will allow total and complete capture of the US political process by a handful of wealthy Americans, corporations and mega banks through massive campaign donations.

Face it America....you are now officially a fascist, corporatist state.

So this is how a democracy dies....and does anyone really care?

Things are about to get a whole lot worse.

Yes they let it pass because the dimwit judges think that money equals free speech. Now we should pass the wear a patch law. It's where the politicians have to wear patches that shows who has bought them.

"Democratic self-government does not work, according to Plato, because ordinary people have not learned how to run the ship of state. They are not familiar enough with such things as economics, military strategy, conditions in other countries, or the confusing intricacies of law and ethics. They are also not inclined to acquire such knowledge. The effort and self-discipline required for serious study is not something most people enjoy. In their ignorance they tend to vote for politicians who beguile them with appearances and nebulous talk, and they inevitably find themselves at the mercy of administrations and conditions over which they have no control because they do not understand what is happening around them. They are guided by unreliable emotions more than by careful analysis, and they are lured into adventurous wars and victimized by costly defeats that could have been entirely avoided."

The vote was 5:4 on the matter so the Supreme Court was actually split on it but those who struck it down just simply had one more on their side. That fifth vote is basically the swing vote to any issue.

Roberts, Scalia, Kennedy, Alito, and Thomas all voted to strike the limit down. The other four justices--Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayer, and Kagan all voted to support it. It's one of those cases where the political divide is quite palpable. The aforementioned five judges were appointed by republicans. The latter four were appointed by Democrats. I think that this may actually be one of those key points where the parties are going to be very divided.

American democracy died when the presidential elections had more in common with "Who's Got Talent" and "Honey Boo Boo" than representing the people that placed the individuals in the position of public servant.

The only ones that suffer from this are the American people that aren't in the top .01%. Basically less than a thousand people and wealthy corporations, banks will now be able to completely control government legislation for their benefit....which is NEVER to the benefit of the populace as a whole.

How is it that Americans aren't rioting in the streets?

Once the money starts flowing...Democrat or Republican won't matter. They will follow their own best interest, which is retaining their seat....and if they fail to play ball....their campaign donations dwindle to zero.

How many politicians do you think will be willing to swim against that current?

I say none. They will go along to get along.

Is there any way of getting this enacted & implemented?

I was also taken by this news but to tell the truth no surprised at all, either the NSA have our supreme court hold by the balls, or corporate America has found a way into the pockets of the justices.

This is going to become an auction block debate when foreign companies and even governments will be paying for the whores politicians here in our nation to do their biding.

No only companies here in the US but foreign interest also.

I feel that a government ruled by highest bid and under foreign hold is not longer a government for the people and by the people and highly illegal if not treasonous.

Because the employer mandate for health care hasn't kicked in yet. For rioting, you'll have to wait until after the elections.

Dealing with those that supported this will come later....right now it is imperative that Americans get off their asses and do everything they can to force a Continental Congress to ammend the Constitution and get MONEY out of politics.

Corporations are not people...they are an entity whose sole purpose is to make money for their shareholders. They have no national loyalty whatsoever.

If you don't do this...you are lost.

Thankfully, the American people neither need the politicians or the Supreme Court to fix this. They need to introduce an ammendment to the Constitution.

If you want to regain your democracy....below is a good start.

Our Founding Fathers recognized democracy for what it is.... a liberty destroying, cancerous disease. They didn't have a dream of a democratic republic, because that is an oxymoron.

All Americans have a right to be heard
and if you notice, on each dollar bill, there is an American. George Washington..therefore, all the trillions of americans need to be heard...not just the millions of biological americans.
