Yeah sure, just sucker punch him right square in the helmet/gas mask...I'm sure that would have dealt a disabling blow (SARCASM). It's a bit too late for things like that. Police have already obtained gear needed to control the neighborhood/city/state/country...or at least parts of it, with military force. Me thinks it's a bit too late for sucker punches. Stand your grown or roll over and play dead. The Ukrainians sure had a good grip on how to whip some reality back into their cops...lessons to be learned?

I think the problem is it takes a fear that actually overrides the PTSD imposed on people via media. The decades of doomporn streamed across the televisions showing the blood flowing in the streets during various riots across the globe...I think Americans are scared to take it there. I think we all know how it is going to go. At first it may be protests, and if we are quelled that way we have gained nothing. Everyone knows it, admit it or not.

We are all armed, save for NY and Chicago. And I think we are all scared to hell of what will happen when the camels back breaks.

The guy is just fearful for his life and she was definitely approaching rapidly.

She weighs nothing, is looking away and is holding a drink in her hand - if that's a threat to this 'officer' he needs to be taken off the force pronto. The police MUST police their own if they want respect - because god knows they don't 'get' respect for wearing a badge alone. Not these days since the standards came down to join.

I did not notice the weapon in her hand, but I see it fall on the ground now. That could be a cup full of acid or some type of explosive. That guy may have saved countless lives if he had been right. I'm sure he will be allowed to continue his duties unimpeded after a thorough investigation.

I'm going to weigh in on this as someone that lived in Tucson for 8 years... but first: to all of you amateur videographers out there- turn your damn phones 90 degrees already! THAT would have showed most of what happened outside of the frame...

Having lived there I can attest to March Madness and downtown Tucson being a zoo. The U of A is to Tucson what The Steelers are to Pittsburgh. The fans are rabid... usually drinking... and clearly insane. True story... several years ago, West Virginia booted the U of A from the NCAA tournament in the early rounds. I had a Mountaineer decal (being a native West Virginian) on the back of my car. The morning after the game, I went out to my car and someone had been nice enough to announce thier displeasure with my decal by washing my vehicle with dog crap... and I lived as far out on the East side of the city as you can possibly get... miles away from downtown. U of A fans are nuts when it comes to basketball.

I don't blame Tucson P.D. for posturing officers downtown. The way they went about it was all wrong... and that blindside shot certainly seemed uncalled for. The real fault lies with the city of Tucson, however. Tucson politics has long been compared to Chicago, and they barely keep their corruption hidden. It's rampant. The sad fact is that the Tucson P.D. is undermanned, underpaid, and horribly underfunded... which means badly undertrained. This has been a problem for years with the police in Tucson... and they have begged the city for help repeatedly.

I can't reconcile the actions of that officer, nor will I try to excuse that behavior. This is what happenes, however, when you have a department stretched that thin. A lot of overtime, not a lot of pay, bad morale, less than standard training... good officers go elsewhere for better pay... etc. it all adds up.

Wow, is this what passes as a riot in the USA??? Looks like a peaceful demonstration to me, I witnessed the brixton riots, Leeds and Bradford too. It was a little more animated than this and the cops were less aggressive. I was in the US recently and I saw a man on his knees by the side of the road being cuffed by an officer when another cop car screams up and a huge cop gets out. He runs up to this guy who is kneeling on the floor and is cuffed and hits him so hard this kid collapses on the floor. I thought he had taken his head off, I was furious, I asked my cousin to stop driving as I wanted to give that cop a mouthful. My cousin just looked at me and said, you ain't in England now mate, these guys will just shoot you... Now seriously how did it get this way? Why are you guys allowing this to happen? These are public servants, they are there to defend you not abuse you. Do what the French do, organise yourselves, get the truckies to stop trucking, block the roads and the ports and tell your government to work for you not against you. Are the police Judge and Jury as well? Why pay lawyers and judges if the police department are dealing out punishments?

So very sad, 20 years ago when I visited your country it was a very different place.

Punishment is oft times necessary for evil deeds. If this girl were my family, someone would have a permanent reminder of his misdeed.

As someone who has also lived in Tucson, I can confirm the local government is corrupt as f%^%. Tucson is obsessed with becoming the San Fransisco, just without the industry and ocean, of the desert and maintaining a "small town vibe."

The local police department is also struggling with adapting to the increasingly militant nature of the force, at least that is what my old jiu-jitsu acquaintance who is a SWAT officer has told me. My god-brother is a local EMT and can corroborate this from his encounters with the force.

The local government displays such rampant and entrenched cronyism that getting proper funding for anything that isn't some retarded construction project for downtown or the SanFran streetcar is nearly impossible. Tucson probably has the worst road maintenance in the country, no joke.

That or this officer is just another to fall to the roid-rage that is ohhh sooooo common among cops.

Not to be off topic, but as a resident of Tucson, I completely agree.

Tucson roads are horrible, comparable to the worst Californian cities. They are also very poorly laid out, which mystifies me because an hour north in Phoenix, commuting is so much more pleasant.

Even some roads around campus are neglected. I hope the light rail is worth it.

Because the legal system accepts the precept that you are lying and the cop is telling the truth, even when it contradicts evidence. And that happens because the cops are allowed to investigate themselves, and their oversight is dependent on them for success. That means there is a direct conflict of interest with any oversight at all. And they are allowed to unionize, which ought never to have been permitted, and their union spends its time lobbying the politicians. And bribing them.

So you have no way to overrule anything they do. They lie for each other, and if caught the judge rarely charges them with perjury. They plant evidence, their unions even negotiate for them to never be tested for illegal substances - few departments can be tested for steroids, for example, it's the latest contract negotiation point that they can't be steroid tested. The only way, and it doesn't work all the time, is to catch them on a recording and post it before they can destroy it. That's why they attack people with cameras. That's why FOP puts out little advisories on things like ways to pretend a cell phone is a gun so they can take it from you and give you a beatdown, whilst stating "Oh, I had heard that guns can be disguised as phones, I was in danger of my life, and you can't use hindsight to claim I shouldn't have been a total idiot! har har har", or "It had an LED on it, and there's a law against pointing lasers at cops, and isn't an LED some sort of laser" (that one went past pretty fast but they did try it).

The legal system is invested in buying off on anything a cop says. If you get into a legal pissing match with one, the city will bring bogus charge after bogus charge on the taxpayers' dime until you are out of defense money.

There needs to be an independent oversight that's incentivized to put cops in jail. There needs to be a "death penalty" system to put cops out of a job in law enforcement permanently when fired for misbehavior. There needs to be a national licensure commission that can regulate cops and pull their licenses if they screw up, sort of like JCAHO for hospitals.

But there never will be, because the unions will prevent it from happening.

i can't say one way or the other....because the idiot recording the video couldn't be bothered to tip the phone on it's side, so as to catch the WHOLE scene, it's unclear what precipitated the action in question...

though, if you look at the size of her, and the size of him, it's doubtful that she could have done anything (short of brandishing a gun or knife) that could be considered legitimately threatening, or imperiling to him....

Really irresponsible to draw conclusions based only on this video.

We don't see anything that happened before he took her down. What you consider "no reason" might be a very good reason to the cops who were trying to restore order.

I'm not saying he was justified, just that like anyone he deserves a fair trial with all of the facts presented.

I was involved in a mini riot in 1986 at Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN.
