Obviously nothing on Ukrainian news so far. They keep denying the Ukrainian surrenders so far. Only the naval heads surrender was acknowledged along with a note that he was fired because he ordered men to lay down arms. All this because a video of his surrender was released by the Russians.

Russia has no intention of backing up ... Putin has something in mind , this is ridiculously well planned by Putin . He was probably on waiting for the Neo Nazis to take control to give him a pretext

I agree with you. The way that it has all happened makes me think Putin has had this planned for a long time.
I understand that Ukraine has many Russians etc, but it all looks to easy for lack of better words.

So the Ukrainians do acknowledge real defections, whereas the Russians cannot provide documentation of all of their claims. Interesting, don't you think?

I'd say you would want to look at where Russia is at for it's defensive capabilities and particularly missile technology. The Yakhont Missile in Syrian hands was a very real concern and you notice...for the whole Syrian issue, US Naval presence has been very limited. That truly is a first in my lifetime with a major US involved crisis and no Carrier around. There is a good reason....

That would be the missile system that the Israeli's destroyed? The Syrians only missiles left, but no actual launcher or radar system to operate them. May as well use them to prop Assad'd greenhouse door open.

Wrabbit2000
This would be with Russia directly, not Syria. Russia's Navy may be a rust bucket fleet in many ways (but in many ways it definitely isn't too....upgrades seem to have been carefully and critically chosen) but get within a couple hundred kilometers of their shoreline, any shoreline they control, and it's 24/7 under threat for being sunk. The Russian home versions of the various systems are very specifically designed to defeat the top line Western (British and American) systems....and I hope we never have to see which comes out better.

Forgive if I am wrong, but wouldn't these fearsome missiles have to be targeted some how and wouldn't said targeting system be exactly what Western systems are geared to locate, target and destroy themselves. The Yanks are very good at EW and would know exactly where such a system was and it would be hit in an airstrike. Russia would be unable to defend it's airspace with a ratio of 4:1 against NATO aircraft which are more advanced too.

All hypothetical though, for now

Putin has been in functional control of the old Soviet empire for, literally, over 50% of the time since it's been called that. He's actually had policy control and power there since 2000. We only need to be a little creative about wording because he took a downgrade to PM from President in what has come to be an exchange of positions with Medvedev for a few years in then middle there.

So, I don't think he's been nefariously planning world war. I think he's seen this day coming, as other nations have and as many Americans (myself, included) have. Eventually, given the path we're all on in the world, someone was going to reach too far or go that one step beyond what another nation could allow to happen. We (The West) did and he (Russia) won't.

Kennedy drew the line...HARD...in 1962. Putin has drawn the line HARD...now. He's more cornered and crowded than Kennedy was in physical distances, but the standoff and stakes aren't all that different here. Ukraine is the middle ground being fought over this time, not Cuba. It's physical and political control of a direct land neighbor, not Missile deployment. Little else is different, but for the personalities involved. That's different to the point of really scary here. 1962 had, if nothing else, professionals and experienced men on both sides (The actual leaders weren't bad either....and I'm only half joking). Now? Well... This is a period I'd hoped had gone for being possible in 89/90. Sadly....here we are again.

- Just a note, but everything is 100% and strictly my own opinion. Nothing more or less... Not a bad thing to note these days.

Hmm, this video was just posted. Looks like a pretty good size mobilization by the Russians, considering this is not even NEAR Ukraine.

Lookout, Putin is dead serious bout this one.

I don't think Russians are too bothered about providing documentation .. All we know is that the law and order in Ukraine is breaking up , Eastern Ukraine and Crimea the Authorities don't seem to be accepting the new govt. in Kiev .. Certainly there is some truth to the Defections claim...

Just now a Ukrainian military head gave a speech on TV.

Main points:

No one plans a military operation only for the regions of Crimea.

Putin must have a larger operational objective for Ukraine.

Even Kyiv is in danger.

(My opinion)

The Ukrainian military is no where to be seen. Drafting began today(Monday). Turnout is low. And will be followed by 10 days of training. If the Russian army wanted, they can walk naked, on foot into Kyiv right now and take over Kyiv with sticks and stones.

I'm not even going to go where we're ridiculing the Russian military. That's ignorant to the point of dangerous and reckless as I'm seeing it happen in some media right now.

Wars are lost before they are fought by the arrogance bred in that approach. We, as in the Western powers, actually won at least one big war by NOT underestimating anyone involved, right to the last days of it. It's a shame that attitude hadn't been taken before World War II broke out, because whatever deficiencies any combatant had at their stage of entering the war was more than made up for in other ways or development, quickly enough.

War isn't quick, fun or neat, IMO. It's bad. Nothing but..bad. In Europe with the centuries old passions and grudges to fuel fighting? Well, it could get real real bad. Mutual respect for what is still VERY MUCH a functional 'MAD' policy is what has seen major world powers around war before. The world was unstable and filled with tension before this......and it needs that cooling from prevailing heads.

I believe the Russia and Previous govt. deliberately kept the Military weak , in case something like this happened , Russia would come in Unopposed...

Only after Russia released the video....

It could be either way....Ukraine trying to save face about the enormity of defections taking place....

Or Russia trying to manipulate more defections by faking some....

Either scenario is possible....if not probable.

As the interim leader of Ukraine he should have personally done this to start of with

As Ukraine has the right to defend it's home land

- All key assets including Ukrainian military must be on the highest level of alert that would mean that they would engage on enemy approach.

- All border security high tend

- Airspace limited to military personal aircraft only, commercial airport security high tend.

- Start drafting up plans to take back certain strongholds in Crimea and other Russian occupied area,

- Try mutual agreements with pootie poots

- Give the Russian forces an ultimatum 'To leave Ukraine or pull back to their bases in Crimea and halt any activities of seizinfg military compounds, parliamentary buildings and airports' and return authorization over to Ukrainian authorities They will have 24 hours to pull out of Crimea or full military invention will take place. Russian soldiers will be taken POW.

In a ideal world this wont happen

Well, I looked up Kazan on google maps. In the video the guy was headed towards Kazan, because he ends up in a hotel room in Kazan. So if they were headed in the opposite direction, then probably towards Moscow, or, directly south towards Ukraine. Either way they can get there, judging from the roads I saw...Look for yourself and see what I mean.

I guess we'll be waiting awhile to hear from United States officials... This, just across one wire feed:

White House press briefing canceled due to inclement weather, press secretary announces - @NBCNews

An earlier bulletin had mentioned 1-3 inches on the ground with more in northern suburbs. Err.. Well, I'm sure they're busy.

Looks like they are on the highway called M7 and heading west. That highway branches to M3 leads directly into north eastern Ukraine, near the tank activity reported on Ukrainian TV, 200 miles from Kiev.
