The Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore, the Warsaw Pact is disbanded. The Russians left "Eastern Europe" a long time ago. A vacuum the west (NATO) has been occupying with IMF "loans" and missile "shields" ever since.

and with the latest's actions by Russia its evident that NATO is still needed.

You guys complain about the missile system yet have no issues telling everyone else Russia can do what it wants in its own nation?

Us guys? Those missiles aren't "shielding" anything. They are a direct threat to Russia. But they are called "shielding" just like Desert "Shield", before it became Desert "Storm".

Lets hope both sides pull back from the brink. Armed conflict is the most dangerous way to deal with grievances and disagreements. It's true the it is the only way total victory can be achieved but the risk of significant loss is exponential for both sides and it's hard to see how it is possible for nations who are so closely linked economically and culturally to gain anything by damaging the other.

In the heat of the moment perhaps Crimea can be understood given the demographics and need to secure the naval base but it really needs to end there. It probably shouldn't have even gone that far, regardless emotional nationalism and pride needs to stop and they need to start thinking about the welfare of their people and their economies.

This needed to happen yesterday, it's not too late to do it today but I fear if the path both nations are on continues tomorrow may be too late. The longer this goes on the greater the chance someone will do something stupid or order something stupid and it will spiral out of control.

Silly! It limits their offensive capabilities, and makes them resort to using mercenaries in Crimea, and Eastern Ukraine. Remember, anti-missle missles keep Putin from nuking Europe when he finally falls off the deep end. This is bad for Mother Russia's pookie bear.

Well, lets have Russians put up their own "Defense shield" in Mexico, and see how that goes.

Hey, that'll be all fair and stuff, right? We get to have our missiles in Eastern Europe regardless that the people of those countries didn't even get a chance to vote on it, but that's because they don't want US missiles on their land, but who cares about some people way over there? It's all about USA, not some 3rd world people somewhere who get to play Democracy as we tell them to.

Just so there is no misunderstanding my motivation, I am of Russian ancestry on one side. My grandmother was a "Russian" from Odessa. I am not opposed to Russia, I am opposed to Vladimir Ilyich Putin, a madman who is driving the Motherland over a cliff. He is a monomaniac whose actions have invited NATO to bomb innocent Ukrainians and Russians. It is not too late to stop him before the bombs begin to fall. That is all for now.
