Blue-eyed Humans Have A Single, Common Ancestor
ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2008) — New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.

The mutation of brown eyes to blue represents neither a positive nor a negative mutation. It is one of several mutations such as hair colour, baldness, freckles and beauty spots, which neither increases nor reduces a human’s chance of survival. As Professor Eiberg says, “it simply shows that nature is constantly shuffling the human genome, creating a genetic cocktail of human chromosomes and trying out different changes as it does so.”

What the heck happened on earth around 10,500 b.c?

Floods, solar maxims....?!

How will we look after 2012?

What about people with one blue and one brown or green eye? Surely this disproves this theory?

What is the genetic mutation

“Originally, we all had brown eyes”, said Professor Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. “But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a “switch”, which literally “turned off” the ability to produce brown eyes”. The OCA2 gene codes for the so-called P protein, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to our hair, eyes and skin. The “switch”, which is located in the gene adjacent to OCA2 does not, however, turn off the gene entirely, but rather limits its action to reducing the production of melanin in the iris – effectively “diluting” brown eyes to blue. The switch’s effect on OCA2 is very specific therefore. If the OCA2 gene had been completely destroyed or turned off, human beings would be without melanin in their hair, eyes or skin colour – a condition known as albinism.

Your own citation states that a mutation "took place 6-10,000 years ago."

It goes on to say that it doesn't mean anything, execept that “it simply shows that nature is constantly shuffling the human genome, creating a genetic cocktail of human chromosomes and trying out different changes as it does so.”

I don't know but 10,000 years ago is approx. 8000BC.

This isn't the only genetic mutation that occurred at that time in history. Three major staple foods (wheat, rice, potatoes) all underwent a beneficial genetic mutation or hybridation at around this approx. time. I started a thread about it, theorizing that it was no coincidence that these mutations all happened at about the same time on different continents.

Now, this article says that blue eyes are a genetic modification at this same time. Granted, the blue eyes do not aid survival in any way but the mutation of the staple crops did provide a boost to early civilizations. Whatever was happening around 8000BC, it certainly was a time when a lot of beneficial mutations were taking place.

People say in 2012 something wil happen. i've heard everything from alien invasion to the end of the world to new world order takeover and global war to the rapture and return of christ. I can't call it but i do think something #ed Up will happen in the next few years leading to 2012..........but the blue eyed thing...is quite interesting but i again can't call it.

haa, i can imagine the first person who was born with blue eyes would have been worshipped, or sacrificed. wierd. what if a person is born with 12 digits in these times, and his kids had 12 toes and fingers also, how would we take it?

New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor.

And the same ancestor, I presume, applies to their brown/green/black eyed descendants...

The above may sound too obvious to point out.
But experience has taught me there is no such thing.

i'm one of 8 children. both my parents had brown eyes.
this is how we all popped out in colored order:-

blue
brown
blue
brown
blue
blue
brown
brown

a pattern? yes i think so.
i found my brothers and sisters with blue eyes are less connected to the world emotionly and more connected in a realistic way and vice versa.

people with brown eyes, i've found are at the emotional extremes or ends of the line. like either empathetic or completely lacking empathy.
where people with blue eyes are more down to earth, concerned more with themselves or the state of their environment.

just a observation.

Interesting observation, Spearhead.

My mother was the only one in her family to inherit blue eyes - not directly from her parents, but from her maternal grandparents.

(Mine are green.
Which is really funny, considering my borderline-pathological lack of jealousy...
)

The cause of Mutation is most likely due to lack of Sun Exposure that causes the Iris to produce Melanin.

yeah. so obviously a large group of whities got sucked up into an alien aircraft or locked into a cavern black as black.
no light = whities

Here's a similar thread on ATS. Not really got much of a opinion here though.

Just saying, in my opinion the colour of the eyes has "nothing" to do with personality.

that was a little dead end wouldn't you say birdie
you'll be all like ithe colour its just natural. it doesn't mean anything.
and if that's so why are you here? too stamp on peoples theories?

that was an observation made on my own family, not on everyone.

thanks for nothing....

6,000 to 10,000 years by genentic research says so? And how many people back from these time periods were also tested? I'm not convinced by these findings of anything other than speculations. We can also speculate someone else came here from another planet and that these were the biblical fallen. So, from that we could say that the beast or angels etc. came here around 6,000 years ago. This would fit in with the period of Adamic people. I'm not a bible thumper, but it might suggest some parallels through writings and knowledge.

Hrmm, kinda reminds of that movie Dune, where the people's eyes changed color when they drank the spice.

Thanks for the heads up!!

I always knew deep down that I was a genetic freak, just never knew it would be because of the blue eyes

Interesting stuff
