China rejects 545,000 tons of corn from US

Interesting story here about China rejecting a large shipment of corn from the U.S. because it contains an "unapproved" genetically modified strain.

Hmmm.

Not good enough for China ?

Do they know something we don't ?

Perhaps their research is better ?

BEIJING (AP) — China has rejected 545,000 tons of imported U.S. corn found to contain an unapproved genetically modified strain, the country's product safety agency announced Friday.

China's government is promoting genetically modified crops to increase food production. But it faces opposition from critics who question their safety, especially those imported from the United States.

An unapproved strain called MIR162 was found in 12 batches of corn at six inspection stations, according to the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. It said the shipments would be returned to the United States.

The MIR162 strain is from Syngenta Seeds, Inc., and is an Insect Resistant maize.

Interesting.

Perhaps they fear this "insect-resistant" product could have some adverse effects on, lets say....bee populations and such.

Will have to read further.

This is what happens in China when someone forgets to payoff the right official. Given the amounts of lead, arsenic and mercury in a plethora of their produce, the fact that they legally can use xTimes the fertilizer amount in the US, I suspect this is business/politically motivated.


That and/or maybe their space vegetable program doesn't want competition…

Sound like a bunch of idiots! Maybe they should do a government swap with our screwed up corrupt officials??? WTF do they think the chickens and pigs are fed before we ship em to them????

Maybe we should quit buying our cement laden dog food from them; that would teach them!

I don't blame china. They already have enough problems with their fake eggs that are pissing people off. I suppose our government will make an agreement with their government to exchange the modified corn for their companies fake eggs.

Most people here probably won't even know the difference.

Corn pollinates by using the wind and tiny pollen grains to float far and wide contaminating fields for miles around.
No mystery here, Syngenta did an illegal unapproved planting and now it's going to be innocent farmers getting screwed over.

We could reject the lead based toys from this earth friendly bunch, and about 98% of the cheap crap on the shelves at walmart....

All politics. The US should really ban most foodstuffs imported from China. As I said, it's politics though.

What is the problem with them rejecting food which they don't have faith in the safety of?

You could reject their "fake eggs", nobodies forcing you to accept Chinese food imports. Just as nobody can force them to accept American GMO corn.
