if ISON is not behaving as comet models should be... it's only because the comet has a rather unique composition or makeup...

it must be a big hunk of ice with rock boulders at the core, instead of small aggregate pieces throughout the mass... much as the OP citation suggests to the reader

the tremendous outgassing being jetted out to form a oversized coma is sorta unlike comet models which say the outgassing should only contribute to a longer & denser tail

perhaps the interior ices of a very porous asteroid are boiling out and making thousands of Jets of gas and that in turn cools off the rockey interior from burning off itself... at least until to gets closer to the Sun...when the atronomers start seeing more dust as the solid surface starts melting off

just thinking aloud....i have no credentials

So, what does ISON's current look foretell, or mean? I honestly don't know. All I can say is I don't like the odd look of it at this time."

What does that mean? Does the "look" alone tell him it might affect Earth now?

A Comet displaying some anomalous properties?! DOOM PORN doesn't get any hotter than that!!!

Whew, I'm feeling rather flushed.

All semi-joking aside; I too join the ranks of those curious about this comet.

We obviously need more information/data.

Actually, scratch that. We're drowning in data, but starving for knowledge.

YES. I want to repeatedly star you for that comment.

Knowledge on how to interpret the data would be helpful in lessening some of the doom porn.

Thanks for kind words & thoughts.

In the interests of full disclosure I "borrowed" that from a tagline used by an AI software company in the early 90's. It just popped into my head and seemed apropos...

There are a few very knowledgeable posters right here on ATS. Hopefully one or more of them will stop by & add their thoughts and interpretations to the mix. In addition to the ones everyone "knows" there is a newer member who's really impressed me of late. I'll see if I can get her to stop by...

Hopefully we'll hear from "ngchunter" and other astronomers here. I've shared the link at the International Comet group so let's see what they say.

As far as I can tell, the unusual behaviour is that ISON's dust production is lower than expected. This might be tied to its peculiar rotation: only one side of the comet is facing the Sun. That means that there isn't much heating going on to blast the dust off, while the gasses are trickling out gradually. This might also be the reason ISON hasn't been brightening a lot either.

Fingers crossed that, as the comet slingshots around the Sun and the rest of it gets exposed to the Sun's heat and light, all that dust will be expelled in a spectacular tail.

It isn't just casual observers or amateur astronomers that are baffled by Comet ISON but highly regarded comet observer John Bortle is perplexed over ISON’s “odd” behavior.

Via Space.com:

Bortle has observed several hundred comets and yet, he writes, “At this stage of the game, with the comet about to cross the orbit of Earth, I cannot recall any previous comet in my 50-plus years of comet observing looking quite like this. So, what does ISON’s current look foretell, or mean? I honestly don’t know. All I can say is I don’t like the odd look of it at this time.”

"Those visual people using larger telescope also often remark about the odd way the comet looks, while those using relatively small scopes and big binoculars report seeing a larger, more-or-less faint but uniform cometary mass," he added. "This comet is currently at a distance from the sun where it should no longer exhibit such a dichotomy of appearance.”

So he thinks it looks odd but can't say why. And uses strange language.

I smell a hoax

Oh, and why ISON and not any of the other comets currently circulating the inner system?

I can't find any either, yet according to this we should of had observations of it since October 10th!

Where have you been looking?

Your link says Oct 10 but specifically STEREO-A HI2.

This may help

That's great Wildespace - I'd love to hear their take on ISON's "behaviour".

Hope springs eternal...

...and I hope I haven't been too spoiled by Hale-Bopp. What an amazing and unexpected show that was!

The people who study comets rely on past observations to predict the paths and actions of the comets. They collect a lot of data but their data can be off. They have got a lot better at predicting the behavior, but everyone has to understand. It is just an informed logical guess when they are trying to figure out the paths of the orbit. Their estimate of the composition of this could be off, that will alter the path if it is. Nobody can precisely know what every rock in space is composed of. I am impressed with their track record so far, even though most of the predictions lately have not worked out as they said they would. At least their orbit tracking has been pretty close as far as I know.

Although how would we know if they were on or not. We have no way of knowing for sure if their orbit predictions were right. How could we tell if something was within their quoted range. I am sure they would tell us if they were wrong even though they know that we do not have any way to actually check if it is right. Yeah right, these guys are smart and as long as all of these agencies stick together nobody will ever know. They are of a kind, if we lose confidence in them they lose funding. All these agencies will loose respect cause they stick together.

So do I believe everything NASA or other major research agencies say. I can't say that I can at all times. I have seen NASA lately admit they were wrong about things. This is a lot better than it was even twenty plus years ago. Back then nobody admitted they were wrong, they just changed history over a time slowly to cover things up. You may see something in your grandchilds textbook that was not the same as it was years ago. You figure you can't say anything, they may think you are getting alzheimers and are thinking wrong. So you just say, how interesting, I learned about that in school too. I do have a few old textbooks and have looked at this, they secretly changed it over the years, we are not always misremembering, they are silently changing things without informing us. If it is done that way, purposely so it will not jeopardize their funding. Like I said, it has got a little better now though...I think

that's ancient history...

I'll take your comet hale-bopp and raise you comet holmes

Comet Holmes (official designation: 17P/Holmes) is a periodic comet in the Solar System, discovered by the British amateur astronomer Edwin Holmes on November 6, 1892. Although normally a very faint object, Holmes became notable during its October 2007 return when it temporarily brightened by a factor of about half a million, in what was the largest known outburst by a comet, and became visible to the naked eye. It also briefly became the largest object in the solar system, as its coma (the thin dissipating dust ball around the comet) expanded to a diameter greater than that of the Sun (although its mass remained minuscule).

I wonder if the comet is split in some way? Causing more friction at different times ,like when one takes flint rock and strikes them together.

Where will it stop? Perhaps some in government know and perhaps not even their etheral scaly masters know? What brings this orb upon us? Where have they traveled from? Have the Ancient ones returned or have the Eternal ones? Pray our call for deliverence from evil and bondage be answered by benevolence.

Interesting choice of words. In another thread talking about the fact that there are now 4 comets in the sky at once, a poster sort of half-jokingly said they hoped it wasn't the 4 horsemen...

It is an *interesting* coincidence though...and I hate co-inky-dinks...

If you haven't seen it, there's some great pics and interesting info in that thread. Link below:

but in the 21st century you will look like a paranoid uneducated fool.

YIKES! A "paranoid uneducated fool?!" Oh noes!

Oh well...slightly better than being a pompous, uneducated fool with poor grammar skills, I imagine.
