The ability to drive the car remotely is totally feasible. It only requires a backdoor into the car computer/controller.

You have to assume US intelligence has this. The only question is when the start lending it to local law enforcement.

For transportation, got a mountain bike and a backpack. Haven't owned a car in 10 years. Although wouldn't be too surprised if someday the government requires black boxes on bicycles as well. If so, I may consider permanently calibrating the parasitic device with an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

We're getting to a point where the advantages of technology are being far outweighed by the disadvantages, thanks in part to those who monger fear, seek to control others, and exist solely by collecting taxes, that is our dark and deceptive government.

That is precisely the point of why the next truck I buy will be a pre-1990 version with a straight 6 engine and a 2 bbl carburetor. Anyone comes near it with a black box is gonna get smacked. No smart phones, tablets or body chips allowed either.

Toll booths are going to be a problem though.

Do you remember "cash for clunkers" here in the U.S.? That program had an ulterior motive. To remove lots of older model vehicles from the populations grasp. Of course it was pushed as being part of a 'stimulus" for the economy. A total lie.
Ever hear of INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM? It is related to the VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX. The infrastructure is being installed all over my state (New Jersey) and the entire nation.

I'd never heard of ITS. Thanks for the link. Quite scary just looking at it.

Personally I have zero desire for the gov to know when I'm approaching a construction zone or anything else so they can "alert" me. Talk about butting in to people's business.

Progressive Insurance. The name alone should tip you off what they are all about. They have a device called SNAPSHOT which you plug into the OBD-II port outlet under your dashboard. They tell you that you may save money on your insurance if they decide that you drive in a safe manner. How fast you drive, accelerate, brake, time of day, MILES DRIVEN, etc., etc. They don't tell you that it's more likely they will charge you more too!

This is the beginning test. Eventually it will become mandatory from all insurance companies. If you want to be insured, you'll be required to have this hooked up in your vehicle, ratting you out in real time with help of the cell towers. This is why there are so many of towers being built all over. They are an integral part of the Intelligent Transportation System and the coming Vehicle Mileage Tax. License plate readers included, cameras, speeding tickets will arrive in your mailbox. These devices are spaced on average every 5-10 miles on the toll highways, and on all the interstates at greater intervals.

That said, ITS every few miles to gather and track usage? That's some creepy big brother stuff.

How long before the license plate readers on SOME cop cars are scattered every few miles around ALL metropolitan areas constantly reading license plates (and alerting LE) any time anything is triggered. Scary.

That one photo of the old stone bridge is just sad having those readers and chainlink fence on top. I'm sure it was once beautiful, picturesque, and now it's a tacky servant of the police state.

Think of our corrupt government officials at ALL levels (local, state and federal) as drug addicts.

They have taxed, taxed and taxed, to support their habit.

Now that their habit of spending has become and issue, because they are spending more than they are taking in, they have to resort to stealing. The problem lies with the fact that their habits have created many victims that they never considered their behavior to effect.

I say it is time for an INTERVENTION.......

Excellent post. The main problem I see on this thread is post after post talking about "creeping" control and greater intrusions.

The real problems we face today are government theft and fraud. Wall Street theft and fraud. The federal reserve theft and fraud. And yet, we keep talking as if these FPOS are still a legitimate government body.

It really is time for an intervention. And more. Lot's more.

The old stone bridge is located on the Garden State Parkway, which long ago was known for its scenic beauty. As hard as that might be for people to believe who have preconceived ideas that scenic beauty and N.J. is an oxymoron. It really was a scenic highway way back then. Daktronics is a company that manufactures digital message boards which are mounted on the overhead structures along with license plate readers and cameras. Daktronics is making a fortune from contracts related to the Intelligent Transportation System via the U.S. DOT.

ITS is everywhere including Georgia.

Here's a recent article about Oregon launching a new VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX. It's going to start at 1.5 cents per mile. As with all taxes, regular increases are a certainty. And the gasoline tax will still remain in addition to the vehicle mileage tax. They're lying when they say the gasoline tax will be replaced by the VMT.

Why don't they start with police forces, add to that the use of smart guns... people are dumb trading privacy for security, make them eat their own dog food first to see how they like it...

These people are completely insane. What's next, black boxes in your kids big wheels, bicycles, go karts...?

Maybe we'll be fined if our dogs run to fast in the park. Hell, strap them on birds and tax them for using the air space.

Funny, one already is taxed based upon how much one drives.

That's the fuel excise taxes.

If you don't drive, no fuel used, hence no tax, and the more one drives, the more fuel one consumes, and more excise tax is paid on fuel one buys.

Double taxation, anyone?

Well maybe if we go along with the whole black box thing, taxing us on the actual number of miles we drive, then maybe we could abolish, Registration fees, excise taxes, annual personal property tax, Federal use tax for the big riggs and last but not least the tax we pay at the pump.

Pipe dream on steroids, yep. I can't ever recall a single instance where once the tax bureaucrats get their filthy claws into your pocket book they ever remove them. Nice thought though.

Older vehicles, dumb phones and disabled gps systems are the only thing that will keep us of the tax radar screen. Of course once implemented that will probably be a crime.

Did you even read the article ? No one is proposing this. Its just a hypothetical question. Theres nothing to rage about. Just another sensationalist article.

The only reason I could see libertarian minded folks agreeing to this (not to being taxed for mere travel of course) is that the tax would be applied "fairly" as per an individual's usage. That said, the tide is coming in this regard and don't think it will replace the Federal/State tax already on gasoline; it will be tacked on.

Still though, I fall back on my side-bar above in regards. While the Government has been surely granted the plenary power to tax by the People, it is still beholden to the People to decide what taxes they wish to agree with. Of course, this line of thinking has gone askew. That said, I believe if a State wishes to put this to the People and the People agree, I see no problem with Libertarian ideology regarding it; save the application thereof and the forced purchase of (yet again, another product/service) for merely traveling.
