Naïve
I walk cloud-lightly
Not seeing the edge
Not knowing there is one
Fool that I am
The creeping monster
A breath behind
And I am blissfully benign
Cordial even
To looming Death’s
Sharp cutting wit
Like I lack a sense
Others have in common
Tripping my way
To fallen fate
If I rise again
My step won’t
Dance
The way it did
The world having
Made sure I regret
My chance
To set a new-colored spin
To time
And hope
And dreams
Or will my wisdom
Earned with blood
Jut my chin in defiance
I leap again
Full knowing
Self-reliance
To embrace the good
To deny Death
The win…
And fall
If I must
Ashes and Dust
Clear-eyed and willing
To gently trust
