A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal"--an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed....

It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.

Hidden Portals in Earth's magnetic field

Very exciting news for a physics geek like me. I'm all for funding a probe and sending it through.... Wonder if it would come back like the Event Horizon??

Well, as "hidden space portals" go as usually defined in science fiction books and movies, these are a bit disappointing

I don't think a "direct connection between the magnetic fields of the Earth and Sun" are what science fiction writers have in mind when they talk about hidden portals in space...

...but scientifically interesting nevertheless!
