Four SAS soldiers are to be honoured by President George Bush for the daring rescue of a CIA man facing torture by Al Qaeda fanatics. They were picked for the highrisk operation because of their success at snatching war criminals in the Balkans. American Delta Force commandoes did not have enough battle experience for the mission behind enemy lines. An Army source said yesterday: 'The American was virtually a dead man already. He only had one chance and that was the SAS.'

US salutes SAS heroes

The four-man squad plucked the agent from a heavily-armed house in the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar. He had been beaten and was about to be tortured for information.

The SAS men slid down ropes from a helicopter on to the roof of the house, threw in stun grenades then burst through windows.

Dozens of Al Qaeda fighters were killed or hurt in a fierce gun battle. The SAS suffered no casualties.

Using rescue drills perfected under live fire at their Hereford base, they seized the prisoner, who was chained and blindfolded. They took him out on to the roof and he was flown to safety.

A British military source said: 'The CIA agent had become isolated and was able to get a message out before he was taken.

'A Taliban vehicle was tracked by a helicopter observing from a long way off through an image intensifying camera.

'The crew were able to pinpoint the building he had been taken to and the Americans requested assistance. A couple of hours later the SAS went into action.'

The Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters were taken by surprise. The SAS helicopter flew in low to avoid detection and the guards had no hint of the rescue until it was too late.

If only the SAS had been called that night in Libya, eh? Apparently, they don't call off a rescue because "events are uncertain".

My hats off to the British SAS for saving one of our people from a fate truly worse than death.

So now expect a pissing contest over who has the best special ops forces and who saved whose ass in WW2.

Just to make it clear: Rock. Flag. And eagle.

We don't change methods since biblical times.

Aliens are face palming now.

Obviously the SAS are the boys to rely on. No botched missions or death from `friendly fire` with these boys.

This sounds a lot like the Battle of Qala-i-Janghi where the SBS lent a hand to their American allies that in itself is a pretty amazing story.

There is no doubt that the SAS are a phenomenal unit however I doubt they were selected because Delta or DEVGRU lacked the skills its was probably more the case that the SAS had the resources at that time required and their assets were probably being tasked with other operations. I know the article says otherwise but I am taking that with a little salt

I really hope this does not turn into another of those petty playground "Who has best spec-ops" type of threads because they are just quite silly.

The SAS did get the job done that is true, but that's not to say that the Americans were unable to do it the article is correct in saying that prior to 9/11 American SOF units had little CT experience but I think they probably could have done this if they really needed to.

Now things are very different American SOF are probably amongst the most experienced SOF out there.

Alright, this is something that's been bothering me lately. Why the hell do people assume they know what aliens are doing or thinking about the human race? Are you in contact with them? Talk to them on a regular basis? Maybe you were "abducted" and they divulged their feelings to you? Or is it that you see how people portray aliens on tv? Play space poker and drink space beer while smoking space cigars with your alien buddies?

How do you know that an alien race isn't doing the same damn thing we are? How do you know that another race in this universe isn't hell bent on killing each other? You don't. We have nothing to base it off of but our own imagination.

The title is a little inflammatory. But whatever. It's not about who has the skills or not, it's about the fact that when our allies are in a tight spot or we are in a tight spot, we help each other out.

Our heroic SAS lads are awesome, they make missions like this look like a walk in the park whilst barely breaking a sweat

I watched this video some time ago about the life of Lt. Col. Blair 'Paddy' Mayne, an outstanding SAS officer who was a real-life super-hero in his military career. He far-excelled at everything he did throughout his life. It was as if he was actually super-human, unbelievable. If you're interested in Special Forces then this vid is a must see. If you don't have time to watch the video right now mark it for later.

He was an awe-inspiring, extraordinary man.

I have been fortunate enough to meet some members of this exceptional regiment and those individuals did not fit the action hero stereotype. They were all quiet, serious minded, highly self disciplined, and patient professionals, and not the gungho cowboy types they have often been portrayed as.

There is an old joke about this regiment being the worlds biggest because everyone you meet is a member or used to be. Let me just say I am making no such claim or attempting to infer any such thing. Any one who has ever served will tell you that hardest training course is the one for a forces cook, because as yet no one has ever passed it.

We need to kidnap Zack Snyder and make this happen ... I suppse we will need to kidnap Clint Eastwood and Obama too ... Vin Diesel will think we're rescuing him from the Fast and the Furious franchise, and we just won't tell anyone about Snooki's involvement and add her back in via the magic of chroma key.

Other than that, I recall a number of these stories being over blown, and soldiers leaving these units with little government support and racking up slightly awkward criminal records. No disrespect to the soldiers, mostly only to the media and the government ... is a very thing line between patriotism and propaganda and most persons are going to end up treading on it in this thread I imagine.
