I agree with you. A few years ago a boy beat an elderly woman to death with a hammer in a nearby community. I'm sure most people would never even think of a hammer being used as a murder weapon, but if someone has that sort of action in mind they will use whatever is available to them.

The media in other countries must do their best to portray all American gun owners as psychopaths who are just waiting for the opportunity to shoot someone. Most gun owners pray that they will never have to use them on another person. I think this sort of incorrect portrayal plays into a worldwide agenda of disarming citizens. Owning guns doesn't make people potential murderers- it is part of what keeps us a free people. If we allow ourselves to become disarmed we have no defense from criminals or tyranny.

I do even a ROCK or BRICK can be used as a deadly weapon!

I hate to burst your bubble, but I did a Google search....
Australian police forces are issued firearms and they carry them.

Oops, I almost forgot, you should tell the cops down under what 'wusses' they are.

No because we all know coppers were the ones picked on by all the bullies at high school they are only there to protect themselves. It's a true hard fact some criminals sign up so they can't be prosecuted for crimes.

What year did that Google search have on it. See they hide behind them because they know they can't fight.

We are responsible gun owners. Why would we shoot to maim? We don’t brandish a firearm until deadly force is required. We have taser, pepper spray, batons, blah…blah…blah…

You have to have the right tool for the job. We gave up on rocks along time ago.

The way to prevent shootings is to improve the conditions of our society.
People's attitudes towards each other needs to improve.

Killers don't just happen for no reason, it is a symptom of our willingness to ignore problems that fester for years.

Guns, knives, cyanide, it doesn't matter, they are just means to an end.

The key here is to improve society enough to where people don't see any point in hurting other people.

It's actually a really simple answer but people don't want to be nice to each other, it sucks.

I didn't see anything posted, so I thought I would share this news. A gunmen randomly started firing at people and then was killed in return fire. I can imagine how scary this is and confusing as well. Thankfully the attack was render short. Despite the loss of one victim and many injured.

A gunman randomly firing from his pickup truck killed one person and wounded five, including the sheriff of Concho County, Texas, on Sunday before the suspect was killed in a shootout with law enforcement, officials said. Authorities recovered an assault rifle, a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from the suspect, who was said to be 23 years old and from North Carolina. The name was withheld pending notification of relatives, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

Any shooting spree is a tragedy when innocent people are hurt or killed. That said, the price of freedom and the right to protect it, yourself and your family from this very thing is not without cost. These things will always happen from time to time, but if you take guns from law abiding citizens, you open the door for criminals and tyranny on a far bigger scale than what we have lately.

Despite the nonsense liberals keep repeating that 90% of Americans don't want guns, the fact is most Americans do support it, and the record number of sales, owners and supporters only continues to grow. Ask the thousands of people that successfully defended themselves from criminals every single year.

We all live in a world far more fragile than many realize, we're one natural disaster, financial collapse etc. away from anarchy, ask Katrina survivors how it was to have armed police going door to door disarming them while thousands locked up in the superdome were raped and robbed because they were defenseless and trusted that government would help them.

i disagree.
no matter how perfect we make society,
basic human nature will prevail, via evil,
and kill someone.

Yes, the cops put an end to it, not some gun-totin' civilians. Exactly my point. Having guns doesn't make you any safer from a crazed gunman.

Your logic might apply "if" any of the victims were armed but as far as I know that hasn't been shown. Simple logic says an armed person has a better chance of defending themselves against an armed assailant. Kind of hard to dispute that.

Then, you have what would be known as an "ambush" style attack, against completely innocent people who were almost certainly taken by surprise.

If we're going to imagine our way through this then it's fairly easy to imagine the assailant using his vehicle as a weapon or maybe a machete for that matter....

Thanks for contributing the typical anti gun / anti American noise to the thread though.

Paul Ohle, 69, was at home baking around 9 a.m. when he heard more than a dozen bangs on his front door. By the time he made it to the door, a man had already forced his way inside. The man told Ohle that he needed help, so Ohle picked up his cell phone to call 911. The man grabbed the phone from Ohle and pushed him onto the sofa. He ordered Ohle to stay where he was as he tried to take his television. Ohle struggled with the man, but managed to get to the .38-cal. handgun he kept in his bedroom. Ohle fired multiple rounds, killing the intruder. Ohle was later taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released. (Hickory Daily Record, Hickory, NC, 2/26/13)

Old folks trying to protect themselves. It really is a good idea not to mess with some of the elderly for many have had a lifetime training and shooting.

A widowed grandmother who awoke to the sound of her back door being smashed open held the intruder at gunpoint until police arrived at her North Spokane home. Spokane police said the 63-year-old woman fired one shot at the man when she found him in her home around 12:20 a.m. but he was not injured. "I just woke up with the crash and grabbed my gun and got out of bed and said 'I'm armed' and he kept coming at me," the homeowner said. "I shot off one round and he kept coming, so I started backing up." The intruder "flopped" on her sofa, she said, and she got the phone and called 911. When police arrived the intruder attempted to flee, but went back in the house upon seeing officers. Police entered the home where the intruder resisted, but was finally subdued with help from the K9 unit. (The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, WA, 4/3/13)

Ernest Robinson, an assistant high school basketball coach, was escorting two of his female team members from the building one evening when they were approached by two teenage boys. One of the teenagers wielded a gun. The gunman ordered the girls to leave as the other teen yanked at the chain Robinson wore around his neck. Robinson quickly pulled out his concealed pistol and fired at both assailants, killing one and wounding the other. The surviving perpetrator is now being charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of assault with intent to rob while armed. (The Detroit News, Detroit, MI, 2/15/13)

Three masked men entered Plaza Jewelers one afternoon, one carrying a gun while the other two wielded hammers. Store owner Alfonso Angela spotted the men through the store window and grabbed the gun he kept hidden behind the counter. The two men with hammers, one carrying a bag, were approaching the glass cases of jewelry when Angela cocked the hammer of his gun. Within seconds, the men were making a hasty exit. Police were called and two male suspects were later taken into custody. (San Jose Mercury News, Fair Oaks, CA, 1/21/13)
Things like the above happen some where between 750,000 and 1.2 million times each year in America depending on who does the study. Only some local news outlets cover the report if reported at all.

I am glad some of the old folks are armed and have decided they will not be a victim; actually anyone who takes responsibility for their own protection is much more of a hero/citizen to me than a beggar will ever be.

Some refuse to march to the ovens without a fight regardless of age..good for them

Not all guns drawn for protection end in someone's death. etc etc but that does not matter to the haters who are one mugging away from having a major attitude adjustment....maybe not; for some honestly do believe it can not happen to them...and it probably won't.

Having a CCW is a pain in the butt. You have to maintain the weapon and your ability to use said weapon not to mention having the weapon about your person in the event it is needed to protect you and yours all the while knowing your chances of ever having to use the weapon for defense is extremely small, almost non-existent, yet; it is better to 'have' than to wish you 'had' when and if TSHF for you or yours.

Being a CCW/CHL is not glamorous and even if you are right in defending yourself or someone else there is usually a lawyer connected to every bullet fired from a gun. Your life will never be the same, even if you were a hero for that day. Look at the guy who saved a kid from two pit bulls by firing and killing the dogs; by the results and the $1000 fine if he had it to do over again..... I have to wonder if he would have saved the kids life or ran away like the other witnesses?

The Police I know never leave home without their weapon even off duty because they know first hand what kind of evil there is in the world...... they know it can happen to anyone, usually when least expected. It is not out of fear that people carry a weapon, but a belief they are responsible for their own safety.
