Ummm the BM wasnt bombed by a participant.

And wouldnt all the participants gear be in one place and not strewn about the line of the run?

This precaution is completely arbitrary and wholly pointless.

Why would I expect any different?

This is overkill.

Look at the pictures and video of the Boston event - or many other similar events - using backpacks are very common, and it's necessary they have something to carry the stuff in. Changing of clothes, towels, meds, fluids, snacks etc. You just can't go to an event like this unprepared without your stuff.

I can see where you are coming from OP, this is going to cause many of us, myself included to never look at a backpack in the same way again, especially at public events.
