Facts we know of the new pope

First time in 600 years a pope steps down.
First non-European pope in 1000 years
First Jesuit pope(have the Jesuits infiltrated the Vatican?)
First time the pope picks his own title
First time the pope uses "Francis" as a title

He is of Italian decent.
Elected on 3-13-13 7:06(13) 3,13,13,13 He is 76 years old(7+6 = 13)
He has taken a vow of chastity.

What is with all these firsts? What is your take on it?

I would just want to note that the idea the Jesuit Order may have infiltrated the Vatican may or may not have had merit in the past. It's a rather moot point now though, right? One of them runs the entire Church. So, one conspiracy laid to rest ..isn't it? I mean a statement of open fact makes a conspiracy obsolete, I'd think?

Does a vow of chastity apply when the person who took it sexually molests altar boys? Not saying that this particular guy engages in pedophilia, but I honestly do not believe the vow of chastity thing anymore.

Nor is he "first to choose a name not used before", if that's what you were getting at.

(I will grant you that he is the first who thought it necessary to add "the first" to his own title. That's going to annoy me, because it isn't conventional practice)

Well... Umm.. The new Pope is a Jesuit. The Pope leads the Church as a person as well as an office. Hence, the idea of theorizing this or that about Jesuit influence within the Vatican would be moot..wouldn't it? A Jesuit now leads the entire Roman Catholic Church both as it's technical head and it's spiritual head. Lets hope the power that can carry with it is used wisely.

Not so. Think about it.
EVERY Pope in the history of the church who has "I" after his name was choosing a name which had not been used before.
That includes;
Sylvester 1- A.D. 314
Julius I- 337
Damasus I- 366
I have the Cambridge Medieval history in front of me.
If you're not convinced, it would be easy enough to name a couple of dozen others.

The most recent, and obvious example, was John Paul I, a combination not known previously..

He was the first to use the title francis.

Interesting choice of name.

It sounds like an attempt to reach out since, if anyone in the Church are entitled to be called the "Un-Jesuits" it would have to be the Franciscans.

The chauvinistic choice would be Pope Ignatius.

Another x-Catholic at the center here told me that he was probably naming himself after the Jesuit, St. Francis Xavier, a widely travelled missionary to the Far East, whose remains rest in Goa, India.
