It is called Flagellation, and it is a religious practice in both Christianity and Islam, it is done to induce altered mental states. Pain will cause the release of endorphin within the brain, something similar to the 'runner's high'.

I personally am not a fan of pain, and so don't really 'get it', however it is an ancient practice and seems to work for some.

I hear you get a pretty crazy endorphin rush when your head gets cut off. Talk about an out of body experience.

Seriously though, I wonder how many people accidentally sever their spinal cords or at least suffer some sort of nerve damage. Some people think self-mutilation is very helpful, but I'll just say to each his own.
