The Killer's Mother Was Preparing for the End of the World

slog.thestranger.com

It's being reported by a number of sources that the mind of Nancy Lanza, the mother of the mass killer, was convinced that the world would end soon and that she and her son could survive (fend, hunt, collect wood) in the ruins of this civilization..

So now if you are a prepper, you are a mentally unstable person and possibly responsible for raising a mass murderer. Sure, prepping like anything else can be taken to an unhealthy extreme, but being ready, or trying to get ready for the potential SHTF isn't the same as being deranged.

Obviously, I know nothing about this woman, or her mental health, but the article presumes that if you prep, you are mentally ill and that is a really bad generalization.

You never want a crisis to go to waste.
Wouldn't you like to be a prepper too.

Well it is to be expected. Throw 1 million lit matches into the open, and some will eventually burn a house.

It's the price you pay for freedom. At least, so we're constantly told. And if ATS represents even a fraction of the sum total of people preparing for the worst/end of times then it is a scary one.

It ranges here from dramatic religious doom pornstars to euphoric space hippies from alpha centauri.

From "God is groovy don't mind all this death and poverty business.", to, "Look out here comes planet lucy and boy she's angry. All hail the galactic federation of light!!"

It would not surprise me to discover she had a presence on some conspiracy websites. I think ATS may have not been their cup of tea, but I base that on my perception of the subset of people here I am familiar with. No one stood out and no one's left a sudden absence.

And you can imagine what nonsense she was filling his head with from day one. It's all good and fun to brag about all your protection, your skills at prepping, your survival expertise.. until your own son uses your valued personal safety devices to ruin the lives of 27 families including their own.

I think preparing for an emergency is one thing. Prepping for an end of the world scenario is another. Especially when it comes with accumulating an arsenal of this type.

I myself am not suggesting all preppers are dangerous, but.....

This makes sense. The father and brother haven't seen much of him for 2 years, I'm willing to bet they were isolating themselves. Others that knew them said ''if Nancy had suspected him of being mentally ill, she would have got him help'' (paraphrase), but if she were getting ill herself she may not have seen him as ill. If he got fearful that they would not be able to survive and started to feel hopeless, that may have drove him to 'making it quick' for his mother.....and in turn maybe those kids too. Including his self supports that idea too.
In his sick delusional state he may have thought he was helping them avoid a grisly fate. (that is in no way defending him for these acts. In fact this is one of few times in my life I hope hell is real, just so he gets his come up ins. Just thinking out loud)

An arsenal of what type? A few hand guns and a rifle?
You sound like the local eye witness tv news reporter.

Ah ah ah not so fast FEMA told us to be prepared so we have been getting prepared most of us knowing we can't wait for them but none the less its good to be prepared.

Funny a thread like this would pop up...I really don't want to advocate the article, however...

Incidentally, my mom had just bought into this "End of the World" propaganda and she has become a "prepper". That being said I can actually see her mental and emotion instability declining each day. The paranoia and anxiety is actually affecting everyone around her as well. She's hoarding all kinds of weaponry such as bats, knives, blunt weapons of sorts and wasting TONS of money on utility things and food...

So yeah, neither want to advocate or discredit, but that's my pertinent input on this subject matter.

First he was a goth now he is a prepper.

Next he'll be a reptilian.

Lucky for certain bankers hoarding money isn't considered "prepping".
Owning the grocery store is different than buying extra ramen noodles I suppose.
Disgusting premise they're pushing here, especially since so many have suffered since Sandy hit.
The government won't help you but don't you dare be prepared!
Talk about between a rock and a hard place.

Since when is 4 guns an arsenal?
My God! I could outfit a division.

This world isn't all that it's said to be. I'd rather go then stick around, I think, if it's all true. How can someone think it's worth THAT much to stay if most everything is lost? I seriously believe nothing will happen come the 21st and the rest of the year. It'll be just another year and it'll continue that way for the foreseeable future. So really I'm not worried. But like I say, if the end of the world really does come, I'll see it as an opportunity to find out if there really is an after-life or not. If there isn't then so be it, my life was "ok". Sure, I'd like to stick around to find out more things and maybe reach some goals I haven't met yet, but not if it means in a messed up post-armaggedon world.

See, I view what we have in this world right now as the best we can possibly have given the circumstnaces. I don't spend my days and nights blaming things. I just think this is the way it's. Either you're tough enough to stomach it or you hide away for as long as afforded or you die. Basically, I guess you could say we're all swimming with our heads X inches above the water. Some people are below the water level and long dead. When the water reaches your mouth, you die.

We don't know enough yet to say anything with certainty about the mother.

Then again, over the years I've seen members boasting about teaching their young kids about chemtrails and the NWO. Kids the same age as those who died last week.

You can't fill a little kid's head with the idea that their govt hates them and wants them dead without (at least) some of them growing up all bent out of shape with screwed-up ideas of the world.

I sometimes wonder if exposure to madness can sometimes act like a vaccination? You know? Some people have crazy parents and it makes them extra-realistic whereas others seem to get infected and share the madness.

So, it went from "preparing for the possibility of economic collapse" to "preparing for the end of the world" huh? That didn't take long...

On one hand, I scoffed when I heard this the first time, because just being a prepper doesn't mean you "believe" the world is going to end. (and for one, if "the world" is over, no one is surviving DUH
).

But she may just be like many preppers- who see that our current society is at a cross roads, and the major world power is due to change hands, and some serious collapse might be in the cards! Just in case, it makes a fun hobby, to learn how to be self sufficient. (dependancy breeds fear)

So it's likely that the media is blowing that interest of hers out of proportion.

But if they aren't, I do find it troubling to imagine kids being raised with the message that they might never grow up, or at least know the life their ancestors knew, so can have no guidance or advice. Adulthood is always a scary perspective anyway, but if you're also being told you'll have to face horrors and fight for survival? Well, I hate to imagine what that does to their mind!!

They are trying to kill two birds with one stone it looks like to me. PTB dont like preps because thay demonstrate a lack of faith in the mechine and have ideas about looking after self, feeding self, defending self in a time when they need folks to line up like sheep.

So true. It is my opinion that some of the craziness I see people perform every day is directly related to the fact that you can't exist unless you are tied to the system. They don't seem to want you to be able to take care of yourself. For one thing you would actually "think" and thinking is bad for the place we are all sliding towards economically and socially. If people didn't have to be so dependent we could have a more representative government. But, you know, sheep like being sheep.
