I heard it was made entirely of Bacon. Damn it I wish it would have hit!

There was nothing to fear from the asteroid. Nothing at all. It was out of range. Scientists knew that the moment they spotted it.

Recall the before and after pictures of Y2K: cry wolf, get everybody off the
adrenaline dump and beat up, then slowly send in a bigger pack of coyotes over
the next couple of years. Same old MO, unfortunately it works too well.

The article you linked to was published in 2009 and the asteroid was designated as a 2009 discovery. However you were right about the recent miss by a rock we found only a short time ago, you just linked to the wrong article.

Asteroid 2012 XE54 was only recently discovered, and will safely pass between the Earth and the Moon’s orbit at a distance of about 226,000 km (141,000 miles) or about .6 lunar distances.

Great thread OP...about 99 per cent of Human Beings and such would not have known about this near miss event.
That is what is so brilliant about ATS you get to know little reported facts...of course not the biggest facts..but enough to educate at least me.

Yes this is an alarming wake up call.

2 days?
We may as well kiss our family members ahead of time because there is no way we will get this lucky again. A near miss is almost always followed by a fatal incident.

Science and NASA are pretty knowledgeable and helpful toward mankind growing and understanding, but this is terribly eye opening. They don't know if a asteroid is going to bash into us until 2 days ahead of time?
