U.S. branding of al-Nusra as terrorists may have unintended consequences

edition.cnn.com
In designating the al-Nusra Front as a foreign terrorist organization and an offshoot of al Qaeda in Iraq, the U.S. State Department has put flesh on the bones of its policy of discriminating between the "bad" Syrian rebels and the "good" ones. But the decision is getting mixed reviews in Syria.

Rebels in brigades fighting around Aleppo have told CNN that the move is a miscalculation. Their argument goes something like this: "The U.S. and the West in general have given us next to no help while we've witnessed thousands die at the hands of Bashar al-Assad's heavy weaponry and dominanc

Yup, it's a cluster#, no doubt about it.

Saw this article as well:

"Syrian Rebels Pledge Allegiance To Newly Named 'Terrorist' Militant Group"

www.businessinsider.com...

Rebel groups across Syria are defying the United States by pledging their allegiance to a group that Washington will designate today a terrorist organization for its alleged links to al-Qaeda.
A total of 29 opposition groups, including fighting "brigades" and civilian committees, have signed a petition calling for mass demonstrations in support of Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist group which the White House believes is an offshoot of al-Qaeda in Iraq.
The petition is promoting the slogan "No to American intervention, for we are all Jabhat al-Nusra" and urges supporters to "raise the Jabhat al-Nusra flag" as a "thank you".
"These are the men for the people of Syria, these are the heroes who belong to us in religion, in blood and in revolution," read a statement widely circulated on Syrian opposition Facebook pages.

I imagine that they're feeling betrayed and even bewildered, considering the US knows and has known all along exactly who they are. More theatre.

al nusra is a terrorist group that obeys no one except themselves and presume themselves god-on-earth. They had committed much atrocities as recorded by human rights groups over the past year plus in Syria, which are against the rules of engagement practised by civilised people.

They tarnished the noble fight for Syrian independence, and had only sought to bring their brand of apostate tyranny against Islam and humanity to become the conquering leader of Syria, with them as the new monarchs ruling over syrians enslaved.

USA and the West had been supporting the free syrian people STAUNCHLY and COURAGEOUSLY in diplomatic circles, even challenging Russia, China, Iran and gansters, and HAD committed vast sums to help free syrian refugees as well as non-lethal equipment to the troops, despite financial troubles in their own nations.

If the rebel fighters in the main free syrian army are blind and foolish to believe al nursra as saviours, refuse to blacklist them but support them, then it is their choice.

It is not too late for the West to call it quits for Syria over such ingratitude by the rebels, if that is what they, al nusra terrorists and assad propaganda teams desire so much for.

Such ingratitude is nothing new to USA and the western nations for all their efforts expended in terms of lives and funds to help the muslims for decades. For all the help, the west get branded and even have thousands of their own innocents slaughtered because muslims believed the lies of the apostate arabs.

The West can simply walk away. It is not the west's fight. I am sure that is what Iran, humanslayer assad, al nusra terrorists, anti american fools, fundamentalist arabs hell bent on repressive sharia law wants, but is that what the free syrian people wants?

Help without agenda by the west is freely given, but if taken for granted, and worse, be spat in return, then there is no point to help.

Best the free syrian people consider carefully.

The west should give the free syrian council 14 days to disarm the small al nusra group and bring them to justice, or ALL forms of aid in terms of military equipment and funds for the refugees WILL CEASE on the 15th day. Any form of humanitarian aid will be channeled through UN agencies put up by all nations as usual and no more specialised aid.

Sorry, I disagree. I think the US has known all along al qaeda was there; I'll go farther and say they sent them there.

This is the same bunch they used to overthrow Gadaffi, using the same weapons the US provided to them, plus what they liberated from the Libyan military.

According to their own reports from 2007, the US knew that Libya was a training ground for al qaeda and/or other terrorist groups, groups that they themselves had declared to be terrorists.

I'll look for the link to that report and add it when I find it.

edit to add:

Here it is, referred to in this article:

"Al Qaeda "Virtue Police" Show up Along NATO Protected Turkish-Syrian Border"
www.landdestroyer.blogspot.ca...

US Army's West Point Combating Terrorism Center report, "Al-Qa'ida's Foreign Fighters in Iraq." The report definitively exposed a regional network used by Al Qaeda to send fighters into Iraq to sow sectarian violence during the US occupation. This exact network can now be seen demonstrably at work with NATO support, overrunning Libya and now Syria. The terrorists in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi that US Ambassador Stevens was arming, is described by the 2007 West Point report as one of the most prolific and notorious Al Qaeda subsidiaries in the world.

Clearly, the US military and the US government were both well aware of the heavy Al Qaeda presence in Cyrenaica since as early as 2007. When violence flared up in 2011, it was clear to many geopolitical analysts that it was the result of Al Qaeda, not "pro-democracy protesters." The US government, its allies, and a complicit Western press, willfully lied to the public, misrepresented its case to the United Nations and intervened in Libya on behalf of international terrorists, overthrowing a sovereign government, and granting an entire nation as a base of operations for the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG).

A similar scenario is now playing out in Syria, where the West, despite acknowledging the existence of Al Qaeda in Benghazi, Libya, is using these militants, and the exact same networks used to send fighters to Iraq, to flood into and overrun Syria. This, after these very same Libyan militants were implicated in an attack that left a US ambassador dead on September 11, 2012.

The US knows exactly what they're doing, and this is all theatre for our benefit.

I used to think that they just blundered into these things and had it unexpectedly blow up in their face, but that can't be the case. They're doing it over and over and over, so it must be according to plan.

From the same article:
www.landdestroyer.blogspot.ca...

Libyan Mahdi al-Harati of the US State Department, United Nations, and the UK Home Office (page 5, .pdf)-listed terrorist organization, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), addressing fellow terrorists in Syria. Harati is now commanding a Libyan brigade operating inside of Syria attempting to destroy the Syrian government and subjugate the Syrian population. Traditionally, this is known as "foreign invasion."
....

LIFG terrorists are veritably flooding into Syria from Libya. In November 2011, the Telegraph in their article, "Leading Libyan Islamist met Free Syrian Army opposition group," would report:

Abdulhakim Belhadj, head of the Tripoli Military Council and the former leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, "met with Free Syrian Army leaders in Istanbul and on the border with Turkey," said a military official working with Mr Belhadj. "Mustafa Abdul Jalil (the interim Libyan president) sent him there."
Another Telegraph article, "Libya’s new rulers offer weapons to Syrian rebels," would admit:
Syrian rebels held secret talks with Libya's new authorities on Friday, aiming to secure weapons and money for their insurgency against President Bashar al-Assad's regime, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

At the meeting, which was held in Istanbul and included Turkish officials, the Syrians requested "assistance" from the Libyan representatives and were offered arms, and potentially volunteers.
"There is something being planned to send weapons and even Libyan fighters to Syria," said a Libyan source, speaking on condition of anonymity. "There is a military intervention on the way. Within a few weeks you will see."
Later that month, some 600 Libyan terrorists would be reported to have entered Syria to begin combat operations and have been flooding into the country ever since.

That's over a year ago now, November 2011, and even reported on in the mainstream media. (of course, they were 'freedom fighters' then, not on-the-list terrorists.)

Thanks for the reply.

I see that there is a strong possibility that if/when assad is overthrown, then there will be a very dangerous, unstable rabble possibly led by this new terrorist group who are now going to be hell bent on "revenge" for being called a terrorist group.

Re the kids using swords, I rest my case ME = cess pool. And do I believe it will spread? sure do. A while back here in Oz, there was a bloke convicted of setting up terrorist cells. He had been ordered to get out of Australia on no less than 3 occasions but managed to slip under the radar and then got married to a muslim woman. He then appealed his case and was allowed to stay. They then went on to have a bunch of kids and he has not worked a day in around 10 years. They collected close to a million dollars in welfare payments. My point, here is a ME maggot who has managed to get into Australia, buck the system and take close to a million dollars in welfare payments and his way of saying thanks to the country where he is allowed to be free is to try and set up terrorist calls. He has my award of maggot of the decade.
