Today's cassini pictures are different.
saturn.jpl.nasa.gov...
saturn.jpl.nasa.gov...
browse the latest images for more.

so I suppose this is either:
the sun shining through the rings and the shape is dependant upon the position of the craft..
or it appears similar to some sort of auroral discharge..
or?

(nevermind those hexagons..)

..and then the latest pictures detailing iapetus through what i assume are individual particles of the rings.

exciting.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with exposure times...

It's very dark, and the camera is using a slow exposure to bring out specific details..

This varies, depending on which side the sun is from the rings...Sometimes they do this to bring out details not ordinarily seen..
