Russia Loses Contact with Its "Civilian" Satellites & The Space Station

According to this Reuters story www.reuters.com... it looks like Russia has lost communication with their own satellites. And all this is due to a "cable break" in Moscow? Ummm, that doesn't sound right at all. An electric cable breaks in their capital city and they can't communicate with their satellites or the Space Station? Its a 48-hour fix too. I know they've used "civilian" to describe the satellites in question, but, I wonder if that is really accurate. Hope these things don't suffer some kind of malfunction while Moscow is still trying to turn the switch on...

And it get's better, looks like ROAD CONSTRUCTION was the cause. What's going on over there?

Russia on Wednesday lost the ability to send commands to most of its satellites and its segment of the International Space Station following a power cable failure near Moscow. The Roscosmos space agency attributed the embarrassing malfunction to basic road repair work near the sprawling Korolyov mission control centre outside Moscow.

Where is the Russian space station? Has anyone ever heard about that after Mir? They have new one?

Uhhh There is one one space satation up there. The ISS.

And generators don't help when you cut the communications cables.
We could have the same problems here. I can't think of the exact one but saw pictures of the control room at a university for one of ours.
Certainly the deep space probes are controlled hundreds/thousands of miles from the dish antenna.

Am really interested in the safegaurds that can help in a situation when road construction can take out communication with most of your satellites and an international space station. LOL

Russia is far too large of a country and too powerful to not have some form of redundancy for situations like this. It's odd to me that only the civilian satelites and the space station have been affected. What about government satelites? What is it that Russia's government does not want people seeing?

Same type of stuff U.S. does not want people seeing. Military recon satellites and the like.

Doubtful. It's likely just a fiber optics cut and their backup communications is probably via civilian satellites (oops)

But, it is a brilliant idea to always have road construction and keep a few backhoes near your building to blame outages on... just in case you do get hacked.

You don't want potential enemies to know they can take out all of your sat operations with one bomb along a roadside.

They may very well have backup sites for the military. But how long does it take for the backup to come online and be fully integrated? That's a window of opportunity.
