That is the only time I have ever seen something close to what the OP describes.
I've tried all the "suggestions" in this thread and still haven't been able to reproduce this on-demand.
It's convenient that *midnight... has an avatar in this thread which is animated so I could test.

If it's a Chrome issue/interaction with relation to animated gifs then I would expect it to be active on every site which features them. It doesn't.
I will add that since I started this thread I have not seen this anomaly.
