800 million Muslims out of 1.4 billion are illiterate

I came across a very interesting article, written by a Muslim, Dr Farrukh Saleem, detailing how relatively weak Islam is educationally, economically and scientifically compared to other civilizations.

Of the 1.4 billion Muslims 800 million are illiterate (6 out of 10 Muslims cannot read). In Christendom, adult literacy rate stands at 78 percent.

Muslims are 22 percent of the world population and produce less than five percent of global GDP. Even more worrying is that the Muslim countries’ GDP as a percent of the global GDP is going down over time.

The combined annual GDP of 57 Muslim countries remains under $2 trillion. America, just by herself, produces goods and services worth $10.4 trillion; China $5.7 trillion, Japan $3.5 trillion and Germany $2.1 trillion. Even India’s GDP is estimated at over $3 trillion (purchasing power parity basis).

Link

Muslims make up 22 percent of world population yet they have contributed only 1 percent share of Nobel Prizes.

Is Islam economically poor and educationally backward because it has not remained true to its Islamic roots, as many Islamic radicals believe or is it poor and backward because it has not adequately changed with the times?

I couldn't make sense of your Opening post. In your post you mention 800 millions of Islamites and then give a percentage in relation to Christians, I'm only guessing there is more to that fact that mere chance as it makes direct comparisons impossible...

Then ...

detailing how relatively weak Islam is educationally, economically and scientifically compared to other civilizations.

There is no more any Islamic civilization as there is a Christian one, civilization has long surpassed religious divides, this seems to have occurred somewhere during the Renascence. We members of the human civilization owe much to Islam as the Europe crumbled during the dark ages...

In fact historically Islam made many contributions to human cultural evolution.

I also do no fully understand what you claim to be Islamic nations, I'm guessing by the tone of the post that those that impose sharia law ? This would be a very weak definition...

Then you mention national production, how many Muslims are in the USA or China ?

I really do not see any interest even rationality on the questions you advance. You should probably start by define Islamic nations so to be understood. Then think about the history of those nations and compare them with Germany or the UK in the level of stability and industrialization (or the lack of it and why).

I think that I can probably reply in general terms that the nations that have a political system directly connected to Islamic doctrines are more backward socially, technologically and economically due to historic events, bad location (oil and climate), the way Islamic doctrine limits equal participation of their citizen (females) allied with external interference that fostered Dictatorships and state corruption.

Perhaps if they let their women attend school that number would drop.

Gross generalization on my part, I know many Muslim countries do educate their women, but it's the first thing that popped into my head when I read your OP.

Sadly, in the last few decades, few of Islam's contributions to human cultural evolution have been positive.

If they are illiterate, they can't read the koran, if they can't read the koran, what makes them a muslim? Religious decree? That is not religious that is just administered "faith".

Here is the problem I see with the article you supplied. Nowhere does it cite where the person who wrote the article got their figures from........or any of their information at all.

I could care less if the person is a Dr., unless he is a proctologist because for all we know he pulled this information out his rear end.

I gave you a star for making a good illustrative point but not about any blame the Islamic religions has but what external interferences created...

You should have gone further and added some links that would clearly inform those that are still in the dark but that would probably defeat the initial assertion you made.

Most religions (except Buddhism) have caused more harm to human civilization than the stabilizing effect they should have enabled. Imagine a world without organized religions. I have no issue with spirituality or personal beliefs even the sharing of them, the problems start when religious beliefs start to create divides in place of unity and start to fight for supremacy...

It's yours too, and this is your thread. What does that have to do with the information in your opening post being lousy? It's an interesting read, but for all we know very biased based on the fact that the author did not supply where the information came from.

Also, Wikipedia is not perfect. Quite often the information supplied is wrong, and it's repeatedly edited.

What else 'ya got to prove YOUR point?

By all means, prove any information you feel is incorrect to be factually wrong.

There are no facts given in your opening post, based on the article. It's up to you to prove what the author of your article says is true.

It's obvious that you are familiar with google, so have at it!

Are you alleging that the Muslim author of the article, Dr Farrukh Saleem, falsified the data in the OP?

If your allegation is true, presumably it would be a simple matter to prove it.

Religion in general preys on the ignorant and uneducated.

That's how they fill the heads of their followers with their fanatic dogma.

Ta da! And that’s what all problems starts from. From idiots.

The whole Islamic world is reading and not reading their book in the right way. I live in Kuwait and when I was in 8th grade, on of my class mates was 3 years older than us all. He could not read or write even with education of Kuwait. He somehow joined the army.

Really shows how some ass backward Muslims and Arabs are. I no longer care for people acting with hate towards me or Muslims/Arabs. They have more than enough rights to be hateful. Muslims have forgotten their faith and their science. #ing hell.

Is that why they don't like cartoons then? They have no idea what is really being said?

Of those 800 million, any indication how many are women? I am thinking most as schooling is frowned upon in some locations.
