According to huffingtonpost , More than 50,000 Americans have been combat-wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2001, a grim measure of the cost of more than a decade of war. Military surgeons have performed 1,653 major limb amputations since 2001. The unseen wounds of war include post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other . Since 2002 , 43,299 patients have been diagnosed with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)

Because most of the wounded are young, they will need decades of help, some of it intensive care by health care professionals. Others will require regular replacement of costly, sophisticated prosthetic limbs. The VA is now training and paying family members of many of the wounded to care for them.
Even so, the overall health care costs will be significant. Harvard economist Linda Bilmes has estimated that the health care bill for the wounded could reach half a trillion dollars over the next few decades. Unlike Social Security, there is no money set aside to pay for future veterans' health care costs. Instead, veterans are dependent on annual appropriations approved by Congress.

IMO if the war was not waged , no one would have died or wounded . Who gained what fighting this decade long war ? Was it so necessary ? I think not

It was the same with Vietnam and the veterans of that war. Long after the drums of war have stopped the soldiers who marched to that beat will be living with the horrors of war.

More US Soldiers Committed Suicide Than Died in Combat

In war, there are no unwounded soldiers.

Was the Afghanistan war for nothing?

It certainly removed the Taliban who supported the 9/11 attacks. The West just lacks the will to leave troops in there as an occupying force.

Was Iraq for nothing?

Iraq now trades oil in US dollars again (Saddam had started to trade in Euros, threatening the US dollar's position as the world's reserve currency). The Chinese have also been prevented from gaining access to Iraq's oil.

War is a messy business.

BTW, how many of those 50,000 wounded hadn't volunteered to join the armed forces?

Few if any.

Was it sarcasm ?

Iraq was never about WMD. That was just the excuse thrown out to keep the public placated.

Did Osama / Taliban carry out 9/11?

While I have some sympathy for 9/11 conspiracy theories, on balance it is clear that indeed it was Osama's men who carried out the attack.

It quite easily could have been but no it was a statement of the likely real reasons for the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq.

Geopolitics if you will.

Regarding 9 / 11 , though they were happy to see those buidings collapse , i firmly believe , they were just the scapegoat . The real culprits are hiding in the shadows

So?

War should never happen

Having said that - and since I'm someone who lives in the real world - war should always be a last resort

Not a bargaining chip, a stop-gap or a procedure we perform whenever things either aren't going our way or aren't exactly to our liking

Our military men and women are not Kleenex

They are not a resource

They are not expendable

They're our family, our friends and our fellow countrymen

Unfortunately as long as there is the human race there will be war.

Someone will always want what someone else has and will use armed conflict to get it.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

You can add another 0 to the end of that figure for civilian casualites.

Sorry, I have a bit of hard time feeling bad for the 50 thousand soldiers who committed the war crime listed above.

I'll support the troops when they are actualy fighting for freedom and justice, not for oppresion and tyranny for the sake of a few oligarchs.

That's not what I've read over the years.

Iraq and China Sign $3 Billion Oil Contract

Washington Post Foreign Service
Friday, August 29, 2008

BAGHDAD, Aug. 28 -- Iraq and China signed a $3 billion deal this week to develop a large Iraqi oil field, the first major commercial oil contract here with a foreign company since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The 20-year agreement calls for the state-owned China National Petroleum Corp. to begin producing 25,000 barrels of oil a day and gradually increase the output to 125,000 a day, said Asim Jihad, a spokesman for the Iraqi Oil Ministr

That 50,000 number is way off.

There were far more Americans 'contracted' to work over there than Active Duty military.

That 50,000 number doesn't include all those American's who were war wounded in Iraq/Afghanistan as well.

It also doesn't include many of the Guard/Reserves sent over there. Hundreds of thousands of them are still waiting for their paperwork to get processed by Veterans Affairs so they get treatment/Disability Compensation.

Many people think Obama ordered Veterans Affairs to stop processing new Disability Claims coming in, to cover up the real number of our total war disabled.
