Well I would hesitate sending you to the Yellowstone thread but yes. This is nothing. Yellowstone has swarms of several thousand quakes.

Here you go. The 2010 swarm 2,347 quakes

Nevertheless, swarms are common at Yellowstone, with 100s to 1000s of events, some of which can reach magnitudes greater than 4.0. There were about 900 earthquakes during the December 2008 - January 2009 Yellowstone Lake swarm.

Found this cool little Yellowstone science video on the super volcano.

Just in case anyone does not understand why it needs to be watched every time you get an EQ swarm there.

Good advice.
I went there a while back and was chastised for asking questions.
I haven't went back there. If something new happens at Yellowstone, there will be a thread about it, like right now.

Technically, it doesn't really need to be watched, does it?

It's not like they can throw a switch to stop it. I don't think evacuations would be very effective either, when it does decide to blow.

Just adding some education

No one has to watch anything,
but it adds a bit of information.

There isn't anything anyone could do if it went off really, but it is kind of a freaky thing to think about once and a while when there are signs of twitching in the area.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean it like you shouldn't have bothered to put it up. Thank you for posting it.
I liked it and am always interested in learning something new. I was just remarking about the futility of thinking that we might be able to change the ultimate outcome of a catastrophic eruption there.

I just checked this page and the count is now up to 38 total and 35 new. Three of the new listings are just after the last 3.0 quake. It looks like they are having a lot of work validating them to post them. That means that we may not know the real total until later tonight or tomorrow.

Ah yes, it wouldn't be October without a Yellowstone thread.

Having lived in the area for over 30 years, and having responded to many threads like this, all I can say is.... they happen alllllllllll the time. And even a "swarm" like this, if you could access the historical data, would show you that they happen (relatively speaking) allllllllll the time. And for that matter, so do new threads when we get a swarm of little shakes like these. Remember, on the Richter scale, a 3.5 isn't even remotely close to half the strength of a 7.0. It is far, far smaller than even that. Not even like a car with a big stereo going down the street or the garbage truck driving by, or for around here, the snowplow trucks at 4:30 in the morning.

I've been keeping a close look on these too since yesterday.

They left as quickly as they came. I'll continue watching the according webicorders for some days to come though.

These are some pretty broad statements. No...they do not happen alllllll the time. Certainly not a quick series of 2+ and 3+ quakes. Yes, there are micro quakes on and off and true swarms every few years or so, but this current cluster is not typical.

You have a pretty laid back attitude towards this ticking time bomb, but perhaps that is what is needed if you do live close to it. I could very well be thousands of years before there is a major event at Yellowstone...but given that it is an active caldera....a potential planet killer, I would think any kind of disturbance should at least be observed.

Just an fyi...a 7.5 is hundreds of times stronger than a 3.5. While I agree that a 3.5 is certainly not even a moderate quake, in a caldera system, it can be a precursor to something larger, or a symptom of movement. It is not the same as a 3.5 on a known fault.

I'm thinking it's a little odd that there were three quick little micro quakes after the last 3.0 and then nothing. Historically, I would expect to see quite a few more micro quakes with it. Anyone else have an opinion on that? That this complete silence now seem kinda....wierd? Given that these occured just on the other side of the known 'edge', could it be a symptom of up-lift??

What is the point of this thread?? I'm sure most here frequent the USGS site.. I know I do.
Or do you feel you are helping the ATS community by stating the obvious?
I would like to know. and maybe ATS too. since you are filling their servers with useless information and wasting my time and a few others who made the mistake of clicking your post.. You deserve my Snarky attitude.

Yes, the info is obvious and yes most of us do frequent one or more USGS sites. But the point you are missing is that this is a DISCUSSION FORUM. You know, where people discuss what they are seeing. If you don't want to discuss a topic may I respectfully suggest that you don't click on it.

It looks like it is settling down. Just 4 new quakes and all 4 are small, none larger than 1.6.

I remember reading someone predicting big earth quakes off Oregon coast and a big tsunami from it like Japan had, he had predictions that have come true, not sure who it was but he was pretty accurate

Really?

Since I am so good at 'stating the obvious', than I will answer your question: The point of this thread is to discuss this cluster of quakes in Yellowstone. If you do not want to participate, than don't.

So does this qualify as a swarm yet? I still think it is too early to tell. Certainly worth our attention though, as I think given the loation/size/depth of these quakes, it is not just your random micro quakes we have come to expect.

Actually there have been swarms reported here and doomsayers flocking every year. Your not the first and not the last.

Yellowstone is quieter and less dangerous than ATS quake posters
