Entire cities dead on some World of Warcraft realms

wow.joystiq.com

This afternoon, Paris time, something very strange happened on various realms. Argent Dawn's forums have a long thread about it, but to cut a long story short, everyone in Stormwind and Orgrimmar was killed, NPCs included. It's also been happening on Tarren Mill, Ragnaros, Draenor, Twisting Nether, and no doubt other servers.

Of course, rumors abound as to just exactly what happened. Most people point towards it being a hack, and there's some videos out there floating around that give credence to this theory. Has it happened on your realm? What on earth is going on? And what do you think

Another cyber-attack toward Blizzard.

Was this a script-kiddie with a lucky find or an attack by terrorists for money/ideals?

Someone called Jadd has claimed responsibility for the attack but this has yet to be confirmed.

If this turns out to be another 13yo with issues, who is going to foot the bill? The taxpayer not-doubt.

Here is a video someone posted of it happening.

I'm guessing that there is going to be some pretty pissed gamers that will want blood.

Some are pointing out Blizzard's obvious security deficiency.

That's what WW3 is going to look like.

Maybe an omen?

Peace

You might want to warn them not to log on until after this has blown over.

Considering how much money and time that goes into building a character, they will most likely appreciate it if they don't already know.

Eh, not news.

It only affects WoW players, not the general public.

WoW is addicting as hell, personal experience. It would be funny if it became unplayable. Its nothing but a time and money waster. Even it you get enjoyment out of it, the price you end up paying was a little too high for my liking.

Expansions are like 40 bucks every year, on top of 15 bucks a month. And in the end, you don't own anything. You are renting digital pixels. They can close your account at any time. No refunds or anything, your just SOL.

I remember them cutting WoW in Iran with sanctions.

They probably made a ton on monthly subscriptions and end up not having to deliver the service while pocketing quite a bit of cash.

Thats just bad business. Not to mention in some way probably illegal as I am sure not everyone got any kind of reimbursement.

Sorry but I wish it was me.

Isn't it like some fantasy medieval world? Well then it was only a matter of time before an evil force killed all the dorks.

2012 baby.........read the signs.

I found the culprit! Here is a video of him hard at work from his webcam. You can hear the sounds of slaughter through the mouse clicking, chips crunching, and dramatic music. Occasionally there are sounds of silence as this mastermind takes survey of the realms he has decimated.

Sorry, couldn't resist... From South Park season 10, episode 8, entitled Make Love, Not Warcraft.

I wonder how many users they lost though.

I'm only guessing, but I would think that there would be a considerable percentage of users who would have walked away from WoW and not returned.
