There is no multicolor system for this. This is just a consumer grade product, it's not meant for large scaled anything and is really just a hobby piece. I'd be surprised if it lasted more than 4 or 5 hundred prints before breaking down.

You can get different collors but you must buy their cartridges. I just looked and they use ABS plastic, which is really commmon, so if you're not a complete idiot, you should be able to refil them yourselves.

Each cartridge will do about 15 mid sized models so that's like 2.5 x 2.5 x 3 or something like that.

I'm sure it won't be too long before the RepRap based printers find a way to incorporate full color.

I have two RepRaps at the moment. An Einstein and a AutoBot.

They both work great and I'm having a few of my buddies see if they can modify it for wiring.

I really hope that the guys over at RepRap get some new dev kits out though, it would be nice to have full color as well as other options.

why would I spend 1200 on a different one that does the same thing
you can really get most of the parts for under 400 off ebay

I don't understand what makes that one so good compared to the open source ones?

3d printing is rather cool. i just wonder how soon it will become an issue over copyrighted things. as one poster mentioned copying war-hammer stuff. can you see them easily letting go of the huge profits they make as people start making their own for a rather small percentage of what games workshop sells it for? $200 for that prediter tank for example. i actually got out of war-hammer due to the fact of it's ridiculously high priced models, paints and glues. i loved the painting and the game but couldn't afford to continue after they kept jacking up the prices for cheap plastic models.

Well technically even if you copied a Warhammer or a 40k model it would not have any value and would be against the game rules to play with. It would be like photo copying a Magic the Gathering card, it would be useless because its not game legal. You are not necessarily paying for the "flavor" of the product when it comes to table tops and card games, you are paying for its functionality within the game.



This card is worth nothing if it came out of a printer, but is worth over 100$ if it came out of a booster pack.

Can this replicate casino poker chips with RFID chips in them?

As a 3D artist this definitely interests me.
I think it could be a great way of starting your own business making things and selling them.
Creating something that is unique, doesn't infringe on copyright, is profitable and is something which people would want to buy could be very challenging.

The more I find out about this, the more impressed I am.

I just had a thought...imagine a world where this is in every home with a computer along with 3D scanners!

It'll be something along the lines of the Industrial Revolution..

Gosh no.

It can't 'print' electronics. It can only print hard or soft shell depending on the hardware. Also I do believe poker chips are done with special materials and a certain weight etc.. in order to prevent counterfitting.

This would not make that process easier. It would take about 30 mins to an hour to print a single chip with this anyway.

Now if you had a 20 thousand dollar hardware kit that does metals and various other materials, sure it could, if you had the know how. Unlikely but possible.

More like it will bring individual freedom to a whole new level. When cheap machines are available that print high strength materials, we will witness the next industrial revolution.

I really wish people would quit dwelling on possible negative uses of technology. Anything can be abused.

Wow I had no idea 3d printing desktop models have come along so much! The Makerbot Replicator 2 seems awesome! I have to get me one of the 2X models when they come out soon. I have a friend who has a reprap and have had fun playing with his.

Also with the ability to mulch up bottles and other forms of plastic and make our own filament this will change the world very quick once properly utilized!

Huge potential, but it will make copyright very hard to enforce! Imagine you have designed an item such as a mug.. the customer smashes it by accident.. I will just print another one!

I think copyright only punishes the consumer and centralizes control of wealth. a good quality forgery is a good thing.. When designer labels sold out and took their goods to be made is sweatshops in China, that is when they lost the right to complain their stuff is being copied. When the gulf between the product they market and how it is produced is so wide, they deserve to go out of business for selling a lie.

I design products and sell them at a price that is fair, this way nobody bothers copying them as I have decided the market value, being rich doesn't interest me as the steps to get rich involve trampling on someone along the way. Copyright stifles creativity and protects big business who use it to repress technology and maximise profits.

Technology like the 3D printer will help us all become more autonomous, technology has the potential to set us free. When over-unity electricity can no longer be withheld from the public, in theory you could grow all your food hydroponically for free, water filtration would therefore be free. There is no reason in 2012 a single person on this planet should die of starvation.

This is what the future should be, a society where we have towns that generate their own electricity, or individual homes. Ideas should be free and gifted to the world, not copyrighted. There would be a 10 fold increase in ideas and creativity if we stopped our selfish pursuit of personal wealth.

thing is how would they even know it is not an original piece? a photocopied card is one thing. but especially after painting the model it would be rather difficult to know if fake or not. heck even the pewter parts would not be an issue for me as i can cast pewter, (actually rather simple to do). who cares about "value"? and even then like i said how would you tell if fake or not after it is built and painted. even noticing small differences would not work since a good model builder will make changes to the models to improve them, stuff like drilling out holes in exhaust pipes and such. i have even radically changed the looks of many parts, to better suit me, on original models. makes it easier to tell it's yours. things like cutting up say a marine and adjusting it's pose, is a pretty common thing to do.

Yeah, I see your point. It just seems to me that this printer sounds a lot like throwing gas on the flames. Oh, look, here we are with society getting restless and the government exacerbating it and we're just going to throw some machines at the people so they can make whatever they want, completely ignoring the possibility of societal collapse where the mental stability of the nation's collective psyche warps so badly, they decide there's no point to right and wrong, there's only eat and be eaten.

But yes, we don't know that's going to happen, and as Nick Fury says: "Until such time as the world ends, we're going to continue as though it'll keep on spinning."

I see where you're coming from. My cynism doesn't reflect much faith in humanity, but that's just me. The potential is great in either direction - let's just hope the world proves me wrong.
