The song was apparently first written about the gay icon Quentin Crisp.
I've always considered it a gay liberation song, especially in the years (1988) of AIDS as a "gay plague" and the upsurge of homophobia this
It seemed the gay liberation of the 1970's had stalled, and under the moral majority we had indeed gone back to being "little aliens".
It took a lot of courage to be openly gay again, especially as an upfront "queen" like Crisp.
I don't think songs with effective political double meanings like that are written much nowadays.
Most hard rock in my youth had a thinly veiled sexual message (although mostly in a ridiculously hyper-heterosexual sense), but the aim of duplicity
in meanings has now become unnecessary, because porn and the Internet has made sexuality freely available.
Oh those were the days ...
