American High School Band Marches with Hammer & Sickle

radio.foxnews.com

A Pennsylvania high school marching band is raising eyebrows with a halftime performance that commemorates the Russian revolution, complete with red flags, olive military-style uniforms, and giant hammers and sickles.

“St. Petersburg: 1917” is the theme for the New Oxford High School Marching Band. Ironically, the school’s athletic teams are called the Colonials and their colors are red, white and blue. The band’s website features a picture of the group with students holding a hammer and sickle

What the hell is happening in the U.S.? Where does tolerance end? Collapse?

How do the principal , superintendent, band director still have a job?

The Russian Revolution is the collective term for a series of revolutions in Russia in 1917, which destroyed the Tsarist autocracy and led to the creation of the Soviet Union. The Tsar was deposed and replaced by a provisional government in the first revolution of February 1917 (March in the Gregorian calendar; the older Julian calendar was in use in Russia at the time). In the second revolution, during October, the Provisional Government was removed and replaced with a Bolshevik (Communist) government.

More from the story:

Rebecca Harbaugh, the superintendent for the Conewago Valley School District, told Fox News that the band’s performance was “not an endorsement of communism at all.”
“It’s a representation of the time period in history called St. Petersburg 1917,” she said. “I am truly sorry that somebody took the performance in that manner. I am.”

What kind of "flexibility" should we expect if this administration wins another term?

Are we at war with Russia?

Are they our enemies again?

Why must we always demonize other cultures?

Demonize? Have you lost your mind?

Have you any idea what suffering and death the Russian Revolution caused?

Maybe we should commemorate Hitler's rise to power in a high school in Ohio next?

After all, we wouldn't want to be intolerant to any other people or culture, right?

I don't see anything wrong with this at all.

Is there a problem with the old Soviet hammer and Sickle?

I further don't see anything wrong with Communism/Socialism if the principals behind them are practiced soundly without abuse.

Nothing wrong with some Communism/Socialism.
How many of you have ex-Soviet Russian friends? If you don't have any, or know any, and you happen to run into some former Soviets, you'll find they some of the most wonderfully educated outstanding people.

Have you any idea how much suffering and death American sponsored and perpetuated slavery cost?
American slavery went on for, what, almost 100 years?

Then there was that whole Civil war thing?

Beyond that, there was still Jim Crow.

We then have all the countries America has dabbled in, sticking its nose in, manipulating and or even making policy, supporting the assassination of leader to set up puppet leaders, sponsoring terrorism, as well.

Additionally, America is the ONLY world power to have used, not once, but TWICE nuclear arms against a hostile nation.

No one else can say that.

I hate to feed you, but come on, name one good thing that came of the Russian Revolution....

How about you just move to Kiev, and relive the good ole' Communist days?

I'm proud to say this wouldn't happen in my town, such ignorance in our schools in these times.

The peoples revolution in Russia was amazing for the nation. It was after the Bolshevik Revolution came about that Lenin installed an actual regime.

Ok... think about it this way. Look at the Tea Party and OWS. They were started by the people but then were subverted by corporate and political interests (OWS isn't quite there but I don't know how long they'll hold out).

Think about that on a large and bloody scale and you would have the Tea Party overthrowing the government only to have they themselves infiltrated and taken over by people who were almost as psychopathic as the people they just kicked out.

The people were the Tea Party and the Bolsheviks were the republicans. Or OWS and democrats, if that makes you feel better.

I know their revolution was high-jacked for crying out loud!

It is not something an American high school should be commemorating, walking around with big hammers and sickles....

You seriously have no problem with this?

Did I just wake up in the Twilight Zone, or what?

I'll agree with you that the hammer and sickle show was a very bad idea that someone along the line really should have put in the trash. Yes, bands often portray historic eras- generally as a form of honoring them. No- not appropriate to honor some things.

But Putin is not a Communist, and neither are the vast majority of Russians. Yes- he was in Soviet intelligence and during those years everyone had to be a member of the Communist party. Putin's specialty was economics. He's written many articles and there are a lot of good video interviews where he explains his view on economics. He learned a lot about what was wrong with communism because he grew up with it. He even warned the US about falling into the communist trap.

He is not a Communist, but he is no friend of the corporatism banking cartels either. The reason the "PTB" make him out to be such a demon is that he does not like their fraudulent and criminal bankster system.

So again-- excellent points about the stunning wrong-headedness of this band's performance and the mere idea that it got as far as it did without someone pulling the plug on the idea, but please look into Putin's views. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I have zero problem with it. It's a school, not a Freedom Fry education camp. It's a place of learning. This is what they are supposed to do.

I really was under the naive belief that we had freedom of speech in this country.....was I wrong? That individuals could express what they wished in an open manner, just because one person's view of history, religion or politics differed did not cause the other to be censored.....My oh My......fyi, look at star trek, that was a socialistic society, remember picard's quote, 'we don't have money, we do it to better ourselves'.

Well.. it was an incredibly hostile culture that led to the murder of millions of people..

That'd be like saying "What's wrong with celebrating Germany 1942??"

I would much rather prefer to see this:

As opposed to seeing wealth favoritism in our governement with banks and wealthy essentially running this country.

Further, let's look at Socialism currently ACTIVE and alive in America:
Public Schools ARE Socialism.
Public Transportation systems ARE Socialism
The SOCIAL Security system IS Socialism

as well as these:

Government Worker Programs
Civil Service Retirement Systems
Federal Employee Retirement Systems
Railroad Retirement System

Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Programs
Public Housing
Rental Vouchers & Certificates
Section 8 Housing Vouchers
Shelter Plus Care
Single Room Occupancy
Low Income Home Energy Assistance
Social Security Programs
Social Security (OASDI)
Unemployment Insurance
Temporary Disability Insurance
Medicare
Medicaid
Medicare Prescription Drug Plan
Welfare Programs
Supplemental Security Income
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
Food Stamp Program
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
National School Lunch Program
School Breakfast Program
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Programs That Threaten Liberties in General
Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Import Tariffs

Socialism is alive and well in America.

Socialism, as well as limited communism in coop communities can and does work.

You might want to learn a little about what Socialism and Communism are.

Socialism

Communism

Sure, there's some deeds done by nations that have ascribed to these ideals that are distasteful and intolerable.

At the same time, there's deed done by the United States of America that have been and are disgusting, distasteful and intolerable.

Tuskeegee?
Japanese American Internment Camps?
Genocide and persecution of Native Americans?

Learn some things. No nation is virgin.

Please consider, every time you fly an American Flag, some of that flag covers and represents the KKK which are protected under the United States Constitution even though they spread hatred and intolerance.

Hmmm, you are aware he's worth $40 BILLION, right?

He was the head of the KGB, my God I can't believe I'm having to explain what is so wrong with this picture here....

Don't get me wrong, I respect Putin's strength and the way he handles terrorism, for example, but come on. You would be okay with your kids playing in this Pa. marching band?

Well that's a romantic notion!

Why don't you show pictures of the breadlines. The mass graves. The tenements. The child labor. The starved farmers.

Or are you historically ignorant?

Well no- I told you that I agree entirely that this band's performance was inappropriate and the idea should have been trashed as soon as it was suggested ! I'm no communist. I agree with you on all that and I'm glad you posted the story.

But I do repeat- Putin is not a communist either. Yes, he was brought up in Soviet Russia and yes, did make his way up the ranks in a thoroughly oppressive regime, but he seems to have learned a great deal from the experience. Yes, he is wealthy, mostly through his connections to the gas and oil industries. He has, however, done a great deal as far as bringing the oligarchs to justice and putting them out of power, and I think he's having to accomplish this in stages. I wish we could at least get a start on doing the same here in the US. These things do not happen over night, and some amount of "playing the system" I can excuse if the person is tending more in the right direction than the wrong.

I go a lot by the old wisdom that says you can tell a lot about a person by the enemies they make. The communists hate Putin. So do George Soros and the banking cartels.

Hey, while we are at it, why don't YOU show the pictures of the Japanese interment camps in the US during world war 2? You know the ones? Where we forced innocent Japanese families to abandon there homes and we locked them up as if they were POW's? How about the whole slavery thing? illegal wars? Etc...

The US doesn't exactly have a spotless history, either my friend...Yet, I bet you are out there celebrating every fourth of July....

If you want to talk about history, cool. Let's talk about history..But let's not turn a blind eye to the atrocities committed in our own backyard....

That said, I have no problem with a high school marching band carrying a hammer and sickle. I also have no problem with the people who choose to celebrate the 4th of July in this country, even though we have committed our own horrible acts....

Are you historically biased?

See you around the board....

You still have failed to point out one good thing that came of the Russian Revolution, and failed in explaining why an American school should be celebrating it.

You suggest we should apologize for the sins of the U.S.A.?

No country is perfect, but this is as close as we'll get.

In the end, I will apologize to no one for defending our American ideals.
