Prime Minister requests inquiry

www.beehive.govt.nz

Prime Minister John Key today announced he has requested an inquiry by the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security into the circumstances of unlawful interception of communications of certain individuals by the Government Communications Security Bureau.

Mr Key says the Crown has filed a memorandum in the High Court in the Megaupload case advising the Court and affected parties that the GCSB had acted unlawfully while assisting the Police to locate certain individuals subject to arrest warrants issued in the case. The Bureau had acquired communications in some instances without statu

Sorry for changing the headline - but otherwise people might well not realise the nature of the article.

the release is from the NZ Govt, and the GCSB is the NZ Govt "signals intelligence" agency - as such it has close links with Echelon and various other Signals intelligence agencies.

the NZ "Intelligence" service, the SIS, also has a pretty bad history of acting illegally and/or incompetantly

Mega upload was targeted because it was becoming a channel for artist to release music directly to their audiences.

Be interested to see the results of the inquiry, see whose pockets got greased and who was doing the greasing.

Megaupload Readies for Comeback, Code 90% Done

January this year the U.S. Government destroyed Megaupload, but founder Kim Dotcom is a not done with the file-hosting business yet and is preparing to come back with a vengeance. The coding work for the new Megaupload is nearly finished, the servers have been ordered, and investors are lining up. A return of the file-hosting site appears to be looming.

I don't think the US government will be on NZ's best buddy list after all this has been done with.

As to torrents/file-sharing in general...

I think this will go the way of the VCR. At first, corporations were up in arms over peoples ability to record TV shows to watch later. Copywriters employed experts across the world and scrambled to find ways to stop people from recording TV.

All it did was cost the corporations money...to this day you can still buy a VCR with a record button.

Tivo capitalized on this fact and have made big $$$ because of it.

I think that the corporations that are trying to stop piracy are pi$$ing in the wind as the pirates will always find a way to get around copywriter securities. I think a better tack would be to embrace file sharing systems and utilize them to generate revenue.

Take Doctor Who.....apparently 80,000 people download the episodes every week.

Is this 80,000 thieves or 80,000 potential customers.

Is the glass half empty or half full?

The corporations have an avenue of revenue that needs only to be exploited.

They don't even have to do anything in a digital sense....the work is already done. They just have to sell advertising within their TV productions.

If anything, I think we will look back at these "torrent years" as a period of evolution for copy-write legislation and marketing.

there's a lot of sucking up going on - Def Sec Penatta has judt visited NZ - he lifted a ban on NZ warships visiting US bases and expressed an interest in stationing US troops in New Zealand.

US Marines & NZ Soldiers have trained together in the US , and also in New Zealand, for the first time in decades.

you can thank the chinese for all this......

we will pay for his companies losses

while i agree that what happened to dot com was bad,
maby the MPAA and or RIAA could be kind enough to pick up the tab on the trials and costs

please

Just what we don't need! Last thing we want are US troops stationed here.

With all the bending over to corporate US whims so far, the next thing you know, any troops stationed here will probably end up running future RAIDS, for their corporate masters, while NZ Govt turns a blind eye!!

Report is released (links to report are in the article)

Basically, like secret services everywhere, the GCSB screwed up through incompetence - rather than do a pretty simple search into Dotcom's status it asked the Police if he was a citizen or permanent resident......why the Police instead of, say, Immigration???
