For those of you not aware, the US has several military depots based on Israeli soil.

Meanwhile, six secret American bases are spread out throughout the country. According to foreign reports, these depots are chock-full of ammunition, smart bombs, missiles, an assortment of military vehicles and a military hospital with 500 beds.

www.al-monitor.com...

The White House website itself confirms their existence.

Israeli forces now benefit from regular joint exercises and training opportunities, access to advanced U.S. military hardware, emergency stockpiles, and favorable terms for the acquisition of equipment.

www.whitehouse.gov...

Ariel Sharon, as Defense Minister in the early 1980s, was the first to conceive the idea of American emergency reserve depots in Israel. The US has similar reserves in Europe, Saudi Arabia and other places. Sharon suggested to create emergency reserves — called “advance positioning” — of tanks, aircraft carriers, ammunition and medical equipment to be close by and available to the American army in the event of a conflict in the Persian Gulf. In addition, he said, Israel could use the American equipment in the event of an emergency.

It doesn't seem to be clear at all when the Israelis are authorized to use the equipment stored at these bases.

Dani Yatom makes it clear that the question is whether the Americans will authorize use of the equipment in the event of a war with Iran. “I assume that if we attack Iran without prior coordination [with the US], it is unlikely that they will authorize use of the emergency supplies. But if we are attacked by the Hezbollah, presumably they will agree. Iran has only several hundreds of missiles that can reach us, while Hezbollah has tens of thousands of rockets.”

www.al-monitor.com...

Take into account that the article states that Israel was allowed access to the equipment during the 2006 onslaught on Lebanon, hardly a war of necessity or common sense.

I mean it makes sense for the US military, what with their dalliances in the Middle East. For me, although this stockpile may have originally been about keeping the US military well prepared, has become almost solely about supporting Israel in times or war.

During the Yom Kippur war of 1973, President Nixon authorized the resupply of Israel, but this involved the shipping and flying in of goods from thousands of miles away. These depots mean Israel will have immediate access to goods in the event of a prolonged war.

What do members make of this stockpile?

"What do members make of this stockpile?"

I suggest that they are target co-ordinates!

What they are is Non- costed, off the books, Weapons not yet supplied to Israel but ready to be supplied. Weapons may also be stolen or lost due to the fog of war.

Well precisely. Even if the US forbade the use of the weaponry/equipment in a scenario of a go it alone attack by Israel on Iran, how could they stop them?

Interestingly elements in Iran are threatening to attack these bases if Israel or and the US launch a strike on Iran.

Six American military bases in Israel will be destroyed by Iranian missiles should Israel attack Iranian nuclear facilities, the Islamic regime is warning the United States.

“America has several secret military bases in different areas of the occupied Palestinian territory (Israel) at which it houses ammunition, smart bombs, missiles and other military armaments,” Basij News, the official outlet of the Iranian Basij forces, reported Tuesday, quoting an Iranian diplomat in an interview with the Arabian media outlet Al Moheet.

This could result in US causlties as;

The Basij report said Israel provides security and military support for the estimated 150 American military supervisors at the bases.

CBS has also picked up on these Iranian threats to the US depots.

"Measures have been taken so that we could destroy all these bases in the early minutes of an attack," said Hajizadeh, chief of the Guards' air-space division. Israeli officials refused to comment. There was no immediate comment from Washington.

The US and Israel both keeping quiet on these not widely acknowledged based, in the public arena at least.

I have a question...if the bases are secret how do they know where they are? That defeats the purpose of Secret. Secret bases would be underground or reinforced bunkers that can n sustain a nuclear blast.

Well they are secretish as in they aren't discussed in the public forum but clearly the Iranians know their position.

I don't think the Americans would be too happy if missiles started raining down on these bases following an Israeli strike, although saying that its not like US politicians actually care about their soldiers, public adulation however covers up for the lack of real support.

I am reviving this 2012 thread, with new and relevant information.

I don't know about Military Depots in Israel, but I continue to ponder the massive down-sizing (under-sizing?) of our U.S. military branches and equipment - while almost-invisible, mostly-Army sites continue to churn out "specialist" soldiers and offer "reverse engineering" of military equipment:

nesd.craigslist.org...
CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL, RADIOLOGICAL AND NUCLEAR WARFARE SPECIALISTS
SOO - 'Step Out of the Ordinary' and join a branch of professional Dragon Soldiers ... as a CBRN Specialist." (And they are recruiting thru ... Craigslist?)

usmilitary.about.com...
ENLIST UNDER ARMY-INFANTRYMAN TO BECOME 11C - INDIRECT FIRE INFANTRYMAN
Sounds like a fun-job: Employs, fires, and recovers anti-personnel and anti-tank mines ... Navigates and orients by map... Operates in NBC (nuclear, chemical, biological) contaminated areas. (This infantry specialist used to be recruited thru Monster, directly to training at Letterkenny.)

Fully one-half of American military forces are Army. As is the Head of the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon.

Here are a few pages from the most recent "solicitations/bids" by the U.S. Army.
