I would say that it is a combination of factors -- disenfranchisement, despair, societal disrespect of the human being, anti-social communization through the internet, the publicity garnered by mass murderers through the media, and the easy access to weapons by the mentally unbalanced.

None of those is a sole factor, but I'd say that the largest is the disrespect of the human being -- when the media relentlessly pounds it into peoples' heads that success is measured in terms of what you take -- fame, money, self-gratification -- rather than what you give, is it any wonder that some small number of desperate people react by taking the lives of others?
