Trance music of the Bushmen (San) people, from the Kalahari.

It opens with a musical-bow (Kora).

Trance and healing dances are often induced simply through rhythmic clapping, shuffling and singing.

A traditional context would be that a hunter could walk the thirst-lands for days or weeks, without ever seeing another human being.

When people did meet, it was always a reason to celebrate, and dance.

Laurike Rauch's version of Kinders van die wind, a famous Afrikaans song and poem by Koos Du Plessis:

The imagery is clearly influenced by SA's long and often desolate coastline, and by the many shipwrecks.

Here is an approximate English translation by Jan Tik:

From the Afrikaans poem “Kinders van die Wind” (Children of the wind)
by Koos du Plessis.

I know an age-old song
about life’s joys and woes;
about shipwrecks long gone
to the cellars of the sea.

The words are lost forever
but still, the tune persists —
like a dimly recalled image
from a very old folk tale.

Visions, dreams, and names,
have been scattered by the wind
and where all the words went
only a child could see.

Nomads, with no direction;
Seekers that never find…
In the end, we are all just
children of the wind.

Peter Gabriel - Biko.

The song describes the global outrage at the death of the Black Consciousness (BC) leader Steve Biko.
Biko probably died under apartheid's police torture.

However, some would argue his philosophy was not an endorsement of the ANC.
The ANC allegedly later channeled BC youth into their globally funded camps, and some were tortured (to death) by the ANC.

Nevertheless, Biko was a great man, and a giant of his generation.
