Perhaps it's the requirements that religions require before the rewards kick in.

ie; no bacon, no drinking, no naughty stuff, no dancing, no smoking, no caffiene, , , , , , , etc.

The rewards are pretty universal.

It's the dress code that differs.

Political parties have a whole lot of characteristics of cults. Hell, lots of groups do really. Diving into covert and even overt mind control people use is fascinating.
