The internet offers criminals’ perfect anonymity and protection form the law, they can hide behind the vale of cyberspace with their aliases. The argument that to police the internet is to infringe on the civil liberties of the innocent, whilst true is also the greatest form of protection for the criminal fraternity who seek to use the internet for their lawless acts.

I guess sitting at home using the phone to discuss their evil deeds criminals are much more open and can get caught way more easily. Hide behind cyberspace? I'm not buying it. ISP's give up the goods when cops have warrants.

If you were to seal a DVD or a CD form a shop, you would face justice, if you abused your neighbours you might expect a knock on the door from your local copper and if you were to openly put up posters of explicit child abuse you would expect to face justice. Yet the internet provides the perfect cover for these crimes to go unpunished only feeding the criminality.

No cover.. ISP's have details of the perps actions. On the net most people are 100 percent traceable. Those that aren't are high tech thugs with corporate buddies backing them. These are known criminals. They stay out of jail because money greases the wheels. Policing the net will not stop them in the least. There are already sting operations that take place for these kinds of guys, they are already being monitored. Taking away a normal users freedoms will only hurt the user, not the criminal.

Its not just the obvious crimes of copyright infringement and sexual abuse but its also its use as a facilitator of other crimes. Take for example childish bullying, it is no longer confide to the parameters of the playground, the internet offers a new way for children to be victimised by their peers. More dangerously it offers evil doers to opportunity to pray on venerable children for their own twisted desires. It is not just children that are caught up in the sexual depravity of the internet but also adults, some forced into the sex trade find themselves as adverts on the internet. It’s sickening.

Bullying is way over rated. Teach you kids not to give a rats ass what someone miles away that cannot hurt you, says about you and there wont be any problems. Responsible people ignore such childishness and dont let it bother them.

People were sneaking pics of kids long before the internet was around. Now that it's more in the open, many more people are getting caught.

Then we have the other crime that is fraud, people losing their hard earned money because a clever 14 year old Nigerian sitting in an internet café can hack your accounts or set up a false EBay site. But that is not the only hacking that is a problem, we also have the wider issue of hacking of government databases that comprise our national security.

14 year old kids do not hack government systems. These are the same high tech big money backed people I mentioned above. Credit Card fraud, sure.. but that shows someone was careless. Dont use credit cards, dont use banks. dont put sensitive information on any hard drive. It really is that simple. I use cash for everything, so can you.

And let us not forget those who use the internet to coordinate their crimes such as terrorists and other international criminals.

Yeah right.. like they just cant use the mail system and telephone lines for that - like they have way before the internet came along. Tell me.. do you have any proof of any terrorist organization using the internet to coordinate their crimes? I have never heard of anyone busted for this. I think your reaching a lot in this post.

Sure they use the internet to radicalise individuals, such as the 2008 Exeter bomber who was radicalised over the internet and tried to blow up a show, injuring only himself but it does make my point.

Every time a home burglary is committed by one, a nation of good people learn to lock their doors. Every time a child is abducted by one, a nation of law abiding citizens learn to arm their kids with cell phones, locating devices, and fear of walking alone. Every time a woman is raped by one, the whole gender learns to look at itself, not as free women with just as many rights as men, but as potential victims every time they step out of their homes.

We demand more laws, more police protection, yet we want less intrusion into our own lives.
Where does it end? What is the answer? I don't know.

What I do know is that I want my internet free. I want to be able to post my thoughts online without my name being written on some government watchdog list. I don't want the law knocking down my door because I did an online search for 'kidney problems' and one of the millions of available links that popped up was for 'kiddie porn'.

The cure for hackers breaking into government websites is to have the government stop putting sensitive information on computers with internet access.

No, no, keep Big Brother away from the internet.

Move to China, then. All the "internet policing" you can dream of - and MORE!

Leave my freedom alone.

Yes, I have to agree with you.

Unfortunately the anonymity and understanding of how to dodge tracking has made it lucrative for those with criminal mindsets.

I think some things need to change, though I think some relatively innocent type of anonymity can still be there for certain participation on boards.

We live in a world where anyone with skills taught to them by those who know how, can hack into most computers and systems, as well as falsely represent themselves.

Internet crime is soaring, and unless we crack down seriously, it will get worse.

Does it take something serious to happen to a loved one, or someone you care about, before people will see that things have to change?

I detest what spammers, sickos, and serious criminals do and get away with and I would LOVE it if things weren't so easy for them.

Thank you I appreciate your comment.

I agree something needs to change and it is unfortunate, it would be fantastic if such a change was not needed but I fear that it is.

C'mon, they aren't interested in your opinions on a forum, they are interested in getting those who do serious crime, and there are plenty.

This isn't about not being able to voice your opinion, its about catching serious "bad guys" and to not make it so tempting for those who are thinking about it.

People need to grow up, take responsibility for their actions, and stop doing things they know deep down they shouldn't do.

The internet is a tool. You can do great things with it. There are also many opportunities to do wrong with it. People need to police themselves so nobody else has to do it.

I did say national or international, like I said in the OP I am not debating how this would be done only that I think it needs to be done.

Regardless of those who disagree with me, I maintain that this is necessary.

I find it horrendous that people will willingly use and protect such a thing knowing it is used to traffic the worst kinds of misery.
sick f****

I couldn't care less if the internet was as sanitised as a bottle of 100% proof alcohol.

That isn't true. There are ways to to stop it, and those who know how do so, and teach others how.

OP is just another clueless and cerebral tissue lacking conservative who is comfortable with the necklace of enslavement around his neck, presuming it will bring security and comfort, and be isolated from the realities of the world the cowardly deluded must couragously confront, or else that idiotic sense of security will only ensure the further enslavement of himself and all future generation through his support of chains.

It is only through openess and transparency can issues be fully discussed and debated. We are no longer the uneducated masses deprived of education our ancestors were. The 3 'r' s are good enough for a human to seek for further knowledgement and enlightenment, in our current age which was unprecendented compared to our ancestors.

Only then can we make an informed decision towards our progress and evolution.

Crimes, white collar, blule collar crooks and criminals will operate under any and every environment, regardless if there is a social media that connects globally or not.

But with the social media and internet, it ACTUALLY makes it more easier for authorities to keep track of who is saying and claiming what, and react accordingly to the rule of law. Nobody is immune to known and unknown tracking systems on individuals on the net, let us kid ourselves not, and have no illusions of 'true' annonymity.

But there is no need to fear those authoritarian style peepings in democracy. We only need to fear if we seek to harm and hurt others. But under repressive regimes, that fear would be real, for one can be rounded up in the middle of the night and made to 'disappear', as in China and Russian tyrannies.

Thus, it takes great courage to speak out. Annonymity is a delusion on the internet. And it takes great courage for one to speak his/her mind freely, based upon his/her own convictions, WITHOUT fear or favor, come hell or highwater. Even a rat when cornered will fight back fearlessly, so what more mankind?

I salute to every poster who contributed to ATS.

As to the question of wanting 'more policing on the internet', its a joke, if not utter delusions. May OP wakes up

I'm becoming very tired of the number of people I keep seeing on this forum, for whom "protection," and safety are more important than freedom.

I do not consider such attitudes, to reside in the mind of an intelligent, or even genuinely self-aware human being. The desire for such protection, usually also assumes a fundamental, chronic naivete about the reality that in political terms, this planet is governed by psychopaths. One of the main problems inherent in the belief that government should protect you, is the implied belief that government consists of people with both competence and integrity, who can be trusted to do so.

Such assumptions are in diametric opposition to observable reality, in my opinion.

I a perfect world, that might be the case.Obviously if people could police themselves, we wouldn't have needed police even before the net.

But people with criminal intent, don't care about policing themselves, they only worry about people policing them.

Serious crime has been a part of life way before the net came along, but it has made it easier for those with that mindset.

That is down to one’s own opinion, I myself favour protection over freedom as I think the idea of freedom is entirely paradoxical in our world. You may tire of it but we are each entitled to our differing opinions

I'm tired of people so afraid to be honest about who they are, that they will allow serious crime to continue without taking a stand against it.

You have freedom, since when is honesty about who you are, and using traceable methods online not freedom?

What next? You shouldn't need a license on your car, or Id to drive because it takes away from freedom?

Yep , tired of the wusses who can't be transparent, because they feel they won't be free.

I wish I understood what happens to a person, to make them think like this.

I don't understand how some people don't know about the psychopaths. I don't understand how said people can honestly consider government to be in any way, shape, or form, a positive thing. I don't understand how it is that they do not see, that government is nothing more than a larger crime syndicate than all of the others which it is in regular contact with.

The only source of governmental authority, is its' monopoly on violence.

A person who believes in external authority, is a person who has been fundamentally removed from their own nature as a human being.

And wouldn’t the world be a wonderful place if there were the reality but such is the nature of man that it is not, there are evil people who do evil things and the internet is one of their tools. As such I think it is necessary to police the internet.

The problem is that you think that this is a legitimate justification. You either do not understand, or do not care, about the fact that our governments consist of fascist psychopaths, whose only desire is control, purely for its' own sake.

They will talk about the need to protect people from child pornography...about the need for "cybersecurity," (an incredibly ambiguous term, if ever there was one) when the reality is that they themselves, do not care about those things at all. All they care about is control; and they will use whatever rationale they think we will accept, in order to obtain said control.

You fear criminals. I fear the authorities themselves, far more.

Who is worse, though? The criminals themselves, or the people who would supposedly protect us from them?

Well that depends on your point of view, if you’re a “conspiracy nut” who thinks 9/11 was a false flag to prepare the way for the Galactic Federation of Light(I am not saying you are just making a point here) then probably the government. If you are a rational law abiding citizen then probably the criminals, for me it’s the criminals.
