Students were labeled depending on reaction to porn videos in class.

Is this just kids being kids or does it reflect a change is social standards?

The incident that led to the suspension of nine seventh-graders at Bell Middle School in May after watching pornography in class began as a sexual orientation test created by students, according to written accounts. Multiple students reported being asked if they had passed the “gay test” in watching particular videos on their cell phones.

Also, should cell phones even be on a Middle School Campus?

Patti Boman of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays said news of the test is disturbing.

Well, we are all in total agreement there...

The Watchdog reviewed written testimonials from 22 students. Their accounts said students in the all-boys English class wore gym shorts and watched certain videos in class. Whoever became aroused was labeled gay. Children masturbated openly in class, according to the statements, and peers complained of inaction by the teacher

I don't know about your school...But, my teachers would of frowned on this activity.

Superintendent Bill Kowba was honored with a leadership award for the policy and the district’s efforts to combat the bullying of gay youth at San Diego’s Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast a month later in May 2011. At the 2011 board meeting in which the district policy was passed, Kevin Beiser, the district’s first openly gay board member, shared his experiences.

I think no child should be bullied.

This whole incident is very disturbing. Sounds like something teens would do.

So Where the HELL are the Adults?

Unfortunately, masturbating in class isn't as uncommon as you may think amongst middle school classrooms.

This test is disturbing. The teacher's who knew of this and did nothing need to be fired.

"Openly masturbated" What. The. #.

In class, and the teacher did not openly say "Put you're goddamn dick away boys?!"

Where the hell is this school located? I cant even fathom this. Kids are assholes, thats a given, but this type of behaviour openly allowed in class? WHAT!!!!

Wow that's really disturbing.

Those teachers should be fired. Sex education is one thing, but sexual orientation education should be something handled privately by parents.

I'm not in favor of bullying and teaching kids to be tolerant of each other's differences is perfectly ok, but this sort of "testing" is completely ridiculous and should not occur, especially not in middle school.

The teacher of this class needs to be fired and added to the sexual offenders registry.

I would also think some sort of child abuse criminal charges would be pending? Maybe the teacher will find out if he gets aroused while the other prisoners are conducting their own "is he gay?" tests.

Yes, the teacher should have done something about it. The problem is that a lot of teachers who have attempted to address this, in the past, have been in danger of loosing their jobs over it, that way, as well. Still no excuse. I'd prefer to be fired over being right than being wrong.

What about cell phones in Middle School.

I'm not a big new rule guy. But, uncontrolled access to the Net by Teens?

I just think the kids could leave the phones at home.

I guess I'm just getting old...

My kids got cell phones at age 10, not for their own sake but for mine so I could always get in touch with them.

With the ammount of weirdos around it's nice to know your kid can call 911 whenever they need to.

Also with tracking software, I could keep an eye on their movements as well.

So no, I don't really have a problem with it, I do think schools should probably have drop off bins for them while they are in school though.

I fully agree with you.

This is sick. I'm wondering what could have motivated a teacher to do this.
The only motivations I can come up with are pretty darn sick ones.

Now that sounds like a sensible solution.

I will soon have a teen...The software sounds incredible.

Sure glad my mom didn't have that technology...

Yeah it's nice, works like google maps, you can find them within 100 feet of where the dot is.

Perfect for rebellious teens.

Lord knows my daughter would have been in many many bad situations if I wasn't paranoid

You're concerned about cell phones?
How about being concerned with children watching porn?

What is this world coming to?

Isn't this a total invasion of your childs privacy? For example didn't you go places where you where not supposed to when you was a child? Kids are kids and it's natural for them to discover new places or hangout's. Now it's totally your choice not theirs with your new found spy app.

Edit to add: What I am getting at is kids are supposed to learn from their mistakes, it's no wonder your daughter is rebellous. Sounds like she cannot findout things for herself.

Oh dude, I don't spy on my kids 24hrs a day, they had their privacy, I trusted them to do the right thing. I still trust them. My son for example, don't need to worry about him one bit, cause I know where he is all the time.

Either in his room or at his girlfriend's accross the street. No big mystery there.

But when your daughter isn't home at curfew, yeah I think I have the right to know where she is.

I'm not one of those nanny parents by any means, but I give myself the tools to be one if I need to.

ETA: She's 20 now, in university for law. She had her phase at 17 for abuot 6 months, she got over it.

Yea I suppose it would be great for finding a child who was late for curfew. But I feel for the kids who's parents are using this app to see what is going on all day with their child. It just wouldn't be natural at all.

Edit to add: Sorry for going off topic. But yea this kinda crap is whats wrong with the whole educational system imo.

What were they watching the porn on?

Their cell phones.

Not trying to be rude. But did you read any of this thread?

Kids should be forced to leave their phones in their lockers. With all of the capabilities that modern cell phones have today, they can't be anything but a distraction in the classroom.

How they could have gotten away with this with the full knowledge of the teacher is beyond me. How is it the teacher couldn't know that showing porn in class and open masturbation were things that should be forbidden in a school environment?

The teacher shouldn't just be fired, he (or she) should be subject to public shaming. I say put him in stocks and allow the parents to throw rotten fruit at him. If we brought back a little old style justice to this country, maybe people would finally take responsibility for their actions.

A couple of people's posts seem to indicate that they didn't understand what was going on. The teacher, or the school, were NOT the ones administering the "gay test"

The students themselves were giving each other the gay test, which consisted of making them look at gay porno and if they got aroused then they were considered gay.

Despite the fact that at that age you are popping off boners all day long regardless of what you are looking at, which makes the accuracy of said test pretty suspect (nobody said kids were smart) the idea that these supposedly "straight" kids had gay porno on their phones with which to administer the "gay test" says a lot more about these kids then I think they realized.

We didn't have cell phones back when I was that age, but I can assure you if someone came up with gay porno on their phone and said "hey look at this gay porno, I want you to watch it for a few minutes to see if you are gay" everyone would have definitely called THAT kid the gay one. Oh how times have changed.

As far as the kids "openly masturbating in class" WTF? I mean REALLY, WTF? This just sounds so odd. What the hell are kids up to these days? Someone said they weren't surprised to hear about kids jerkin it in class, and they said this happens a lot. Really? What kind of school did you go to? I never remember kids sitting around at their desks wackin off. This would have been seen as very odd behavior, and most likely anybody involved would have been made fun of all school year long.

I'm really questioning the claim about that happening, unless of course the teacher was a pedo or something and encouraged it. But even then, I think most students would have been freaking out and raised hell about it. Unless kids are just really, really dumb these days.
