It's done this way on purpose. Money is "lost" intentionally. The problem with socialism is all the greedy people pulling the strings who claim, "Now you have socialism. Get back to work and stop complaining." The problem with capitalism is that you have all those greedy people pulling the strings saying, "Now you're proudly playing the game. Get back to work and stop complaining."

Your right! Social security, the defense budget, medicaid, Medicare, etc. those are all such glowing examples of how great government is! We should totally let the government that has put us 10 trillion dollars in debt have complete control over our banks...
It's laughable that anybody thinks a government that can't even propose a budget let alone balance one should control all banks.

Hello there,
I just happen to be sitting in downtown Reykjavík (the capital of Iceland) right this moment and i can for sure tell you that there is no revolution going on around here.
The revolution you talk about was very short and very ineffective and the new government refused to listen to similar protests and is doing nothing constructive for our society.
The banks, in stead of being controlled by a CEO or owner are now controlled by lawyers who sell every property the banks owned on a fire-sale back to the previous scum and new scum.
The revolution has died down to about 5 - 10 people that occasionally drive by parliament and honk they´r car horns.
Almost every political decision stinks of EU interests and nobody seems to agree with anyone, not even political-party members in the same party.
Soon we will have a SERIOUSLY BIAS president (female - no sexism intended) that is a 100% political virgin. Her previous career being a morning news/talk-show host. Coincidentally her father was one of the founders of 1 of the 2 ruling parties. When she will be voted president she will take a leave to have a child and our prime minister will become both president and prime minister at the same time (u know... the lesbian one).
So.... yeah... no real revolution and this thread is obviously not based on intense research.
This actually got me wondering just how many threads here are written based on this level of research....edit on 20-5-2012 by eirgud because: spelling errorsedit on 20-5-2012 by eirgud because: fixed some grammar and added content about upcoming president

I feel like I have to moderate you guys here a bit. I was as amazed as you all at first, but then I thought, why not get the news straight from the horses mouth?
What you are suggesting here... is the truth WITH MODIFICATIONS... there's is not a revolution per say, but the changes are welcomed non the less.
Here's a google translate from an Icelandic friend of mine. I didn't suggest anything to him... I only showed him the link to the CNN article and then I sat back and waited for a response. Here's what he wrote:
Thanks for the challenge ...
This is a very strange article and I'm actually a little shocked. Either CNN / journalist not done his homework or some other agenda is controlling. Anyway, the article is both misleading and lacks info. I'll go through their article point by point.
Regards, Arnar
Resignation of the whole government
Truth with modifications. The government was forced to resign after large protests. One of the government parties (SF; Socialists) was still a member of the new government, and only two ministers from SF saw reasons to resign.
Nationalization of the banks.
Wrong. Un-Danish creditors took over two of the three cracked big banks. The third, Landsbankinn (architect behind Icesave) is under the supervision of the state.
Referendum so that the people can decide over the economic decisions.
Truth with modifications. The president chose to use its veto right, showing the highly controversial Icesave agreement to a referendum twice. The case is now being processed by the EFTA Court. Other controversial cases have unfortunately not received this treatment.
Incarcerating the responsible parties
Truth with modifications.
The political elite: A few weeks ago, the former primeminister was put in court ("Landsdom") who came together before the first time ever. All his ministerial colleagues escaped charges after political room deals. He was convicted of having broken the "good governance" and escaped with symbolic reprimand. A few members of parliament have felt, against their will, the need to quit or take time off for an indefinite period.
The financial elite: In the wake of the crash created parliament, an independent committee whose task was to examine both the political and financial structure and the ground before things went so wrong gruligt. Study Committee did a good piece work but unfortunately things have not moved much since. A new office was created, however, the thesis accuser who works with several large and medium-sized financial matters, but we still lack getting some real indictments and convictions. Some small fish have been convicted but most of the major villains have fled abroad and continue its business.
Rewriting of the constitution by its people
Truth with modifications. Following the independent Examination Committee made his report, it was clear that something was wrong with the foundation. The people wanted a new Constitution and to respond to pressure the new government was forced to act. On a "new" democratically, was team workshops and finally selected a constitutional council by referendum. Council, which worked well and efficiently delivered draft for a new constitution, which was supposed to have a referendum. We are still waiting ...
Hope that you've got a little clearer view on CNN Icelandic Utopia.
Regards, Arnar

So, they're to blame for income inequality, inefficiency, and lack of central planning? Would we all be contributing to society 20 hours a week and enjoying the remainder of our time with beautiful options if it were not for them? Are you saying we could be a carefree species if unbridled unregulated capitalism were in effect? Would we have a healthy ecosystem and air quality? Would free renewable energy and abundant leisure time finally be a reality? I'm curious how a system based on accruing wealth at the expense of the worker and the customer will bring unification and release.

Iceland will be first country in Europe to beat economical crisis. Though it was first country to fall, it recovered quickly because people wanted so and they totally changed government and fired all bankers who were responsible for this crisis. All biggest banks were nationalized.
This should happen everywhere in World. No private banks, all should be nationalized.
I'm not so sure what you mean about this, could you go deeper into details?
Norway and it's citizens has not experienced anything different after this new economical crisis came once more. I feel that today is the same as yesterday.

Nothing should be nationalized, everything should be privatized. Centralization is corruption, and de-facto authoritarianism.
You want a totalitarian government, nationalize everything.
You want every business or medical transaction to feel like a trip to the department of motor vehicles, nationalize everything.

Iceland is a fascinating country, but they have far less inhabitants than the city where I live. So it is no wonder, we hear only little from there.
This fact also lets me doubt, if they would have much influence on the rest of the world.
Iceland was huge in banking sector, and fall of Icelandic banks caused economic collapse in Europe, after that banks started failing in Europe.
But other than that, Iceland is poor in natural resources, except abundant supply of geothermal energy, main income is fish market. This is why it was almost death blow to Iceland when banks started failing. Aluminium industry is on good rise there.
But now they have bright futureedit on 20-5-2012 by Thebel because: (no reason given)
