A Canadian Muslim gay activist launched her controversial new book on liberal Islam in Muslim-majority Malaysia Saturday despite a government minister's attempts to shut down the event.

Jamil Khir Baharom, minister in charge of Islamic affairs, had said Islamic officials and the Home Ministry would not allow the author's roadshow in the country following complaints.

He was quoted by national news agency Bernama as saying earlier on Saturday that the book was offensive to Muslims as was Manji's ideology and openly gay lifestyle, which was deemed to be against Islam.

Irshad Manji launched "Allah, Liberty and Love" at a hastily arranged event in the capital Kuala Lumpur after two other venues pulled out of hosting her, according to local publisher ZI Publications.

Her previous book "The Trouble with Islam Today" has already been banned in Malaysia.

Manji also faced problems while touring Indonesia before coming to Malaysia. Police shut down several events after the Islamic Defenders Front group held violent protests condemning her liberal views on Islam and her homosexuality.

A Canadian Muslim fighting for gay rights in Malaysia and Indonesia. That can only be a good thing.

If Islam had more people like her, then perhaps Islam wouldn't have such an image problem?

Yes, you are correct, but it would not be called Islam anymore.

Apparently she is a Muslim by conversion. Being a Canadian gay may have something to do with her stance as well.

Still, the Bible is against homosexuality but we now have gay ministers in the UK.

Perhaps she can help drag Islam out of the 7th century?

I'm afraid the answer is clear, NEVER.
What is in the book cannot be change, thus the law it carry.
The law is harsh, yes, and so do a father teaching his child of wrong doing.
I believe she/he not clear to the matter before conversion.

Verses From Qur'an:
026.165-166 "Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males, And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing (all limits)!"
027.055 Would ye really approach men in your lusts rather than women? Nay, ye are a people (grossly) ignorant!
029.028-29 And (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you. Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of God if thou tellest the truth."

I copied and paste from here
"There are many reasons why it is forbidden in Islam. Homosexuality is dangerous for the health of the individuals and for the society. It is a main cause of one of the most harmful and fatal diseases. It is disgraceful for both men and women. It degrades a person. Islam teaches that men should be men and women should be women. Homosexuality deprives a man of his manhood and a woman of her womanhood. It is the most un-natural way of life. Homosexuality leads to the destruction of family life."

I give her less than a year.

Muslims are very angry people, too many want to be martyrs.

Been there - done that with Christianity.

Neither Christianity nor Islam will win the fight of individual's rights.

This is where you get it wrong. The Quran was deemed completed and has not, shall not and will not change. So, how can the law be change ?

You can have my life if she can change it
, seriously.

Before I left the religion of Islam to become a non-believing apostate, I too was filled with blind rage and hate for homosexuals. Even in open conversation I would proudly make statements like, "Yeah, I believe all homosexuals should get the death penalty."

Since leaving Islam I have befriended several gay men and lesbian women, as well as a multitude of bisexuals.

One of my deepest regrets is propagating so much hate into the world.

How the hell could I have become so disillusioned by a religion as to forget that homosexuals are human?

May the strength and courage of Allah be with this courageous woman.

Peace.

The law of Islam can not change, but humans can change and walk away from Islam just as I have.

Animals illustrate homosexual tendencies... shall we execute them and condemn them to eternal hell fire? Why does Allah create gay animals if it is such a sin?

What is a homosexual doing to YOU personally? Is it oppressing you or are you attempting to oppress them?

Assalaamu alaikum.

The Muslim youth - - - similar to the Christian youth.

They are not going to be held down by ancient script - - that does not apply to their world.

Some will - of course - - - but change will come from this next generation of globally informed independent minds.

Wonderful post.

I was raised Christian - - - and bless the day I got a job at a company that hired many gays/lesbians - - - which removed me from my own ignorance.

Since then - - stepping completely out of the "god circle" - - - was like a weight was lifted off me - - and the clouds parted to clear blue skies.

Salam,

Yes, anyone can walk away, so do she and I believe she will.
I dont think I want level myself with animals.

Nothing, no harm and I dont even hate them, its just I against what do they do. Like pets that poop in the house.
The penalty and conviction is as zina in Shafie, still 4 guys and red handed, I think.
Whatever, its ingrained already that it is gross, I believe its more of lust instead of logic, defy natural selection and skewed the natural family values. Religious, cultural, logic and naturally I'm unable to accept it.

2 gay adopted a daughter, who gonna breastfeed and take care of her (if that small) ? and will they procreate with each other if shes older ? On grandchild, who will be the grandfather if any ? Can the "husband" take the "granddaughter" as his "wife", or the "mother" took the "granddaughter" as his partner when they are older in both case ? What if the bio mother want to make her kid as partner ? Can the "grandfather" stop it ?
Heck, I even got problem naming them in the example!

Notice the problem that can arise ? The complexity rise exponentially with new family members. Its arguable it hard to happen, but its due to mostly age/generation difference I guess, too much to think about and nothing is impossible, lets just avoid it all together.

Its all just lust that is talking and logic was skewed to make it feel and sounds right. There are reasons Sodom and Gumorrah mentioned in holy books. If its OK I dont think we even know the city name.

Exactly what is needed all throughout the Middle East, Woman liberation. Women are treated like dogs over there and the sad thing is their entire social system suffers because women have no right to question the man’s decision. It would be hard to liberate women in the Middle East, why would the men want to allow it when the law and the church raise the men above other people. You could liberate half of the Middle East just by giving woman equal rights and never fire a shot. Women are a very important component of the social structure. Good for her there should be more burka burners like her.
