Liberal, democrat, conservative, republican, yada yada yada. What does it mean exactly?
It is opinion that labeling your self and somebody else as such is self-limiting, and destroys relevant, free and original thought. Labeling yourself
as such, causes you to "grow" in one direction, and stops you from branching out so that you may bloom and thrive.
I am not satisfied with a Two Party system. I get the idea that one would theoretically keep the other in balance and offer differing perspectives,
but even with the occasional interaction of a third party, the choices we have are no longer relevant in the complex world, dynamic, and
globally-connected world we live in today. Even if you were to add Socialists, Anarchists, or anything else into the mix, the mix is still full of
politicians that define themselves by one word, or very few words.
Look at the America we live in today. Take the recent Debt Ceiling debates. Our politicians are not voting for themselves anymore. They do not do what
they personally think is the right move. They do what the Party demands of them. Republicans are opposing Obama and the Democrats not because they
disagree, but simply because they are Republicans. The chose to be Republicans, and in today's America, that means doing the opposite of the
Democrats. Same goes with the Democrats. Both parties operate in complete opposition to the other side. It is no longer about what one person thinks,
it is about group-think. It is about getting your political party into power, regardless of the philosophies or personally opinions of the individuals
that comprise it.
It is like we are a schizophrenic nation.
It is my opinion that we live in such a complex world, that these political ideologies are not only outdated, but divisive and simplistic. This too
goes for anything that you name. Take art for example. There used to be clear differences between Rock and Jazz and Rap, and now we have bands than
fuse all musical genres together, and who are, in essence, undefinable to the extent that they have many definitions. Now we even have Post-Rock, with
Rock still thriving.
It is my opinion that anyone who defines themselves with a word, be it Hippy, Conservative, Artist, Scientist, or whatever, is missing the point. What
is a scientist if he cannot see art in nature? What is an artist if he cannot see the science behind his work? Is a landscaper not an artist too? What
is a mathematician if he is ignorant of the religious implications of his work? You can't be one thing all the time. Life is too complex and too
demanding. You have to be flexible. You have to mold yourself to the situation.
Bruce Lee once said, "Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless,
shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it
becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."
I am a situationist, and I believe that there is no ideology or "ism" that can solve any problem every time, and in a time where the entire Globe is
connected, with people on the one side of the earth influencing those on the other, with different modes of thought blending into the minds of other
modes of thought, there is no longer any use for those all encompassing words.
